😄 ok hotel - easy to say review

is it?

genre: rock /// indie
runtime: 2:49
video: yes

good morning! if you’re reading this when it’s sent out, i’ll be on a little airoplane shooting across france, on my way to primavera. check out our instagram for all the nonsense we get up to and look forward to a lil write up on the festival and what acts i thoguht were really good. in the meantime tho, we’ve got a banger for you. meet ok hotel, a band who are dropping banger after banger, and making a lil headway while they’re at it. their indie rock song easy to say is our song this week.

click the picture up above to give it a listen!

what i liked! :)

this song does a ton of stuff ever so slightly differently which i’m enjoying a lot. the really bright sound on the drums for example is a gentle step away from the really established sound that songs like this have. foregoing the massive and incredibly powerful drums you’d expect for songs with that touch of a hardcore influence, opting for something poppy and light without sacrificing oomph. on top of that, the vocal work here is interesting, the slight use of fake out falcetto, the hovering around the main hook melody in the verse. this is also in my opinion about the right use of ‘american post-hardcore singer voice’, which is a phenominom which did a lot back in the day, and has really faded off in most popular music, but it’s echoes still linger and imo it can be used well. i think this is a good example of that. top all that off with jangly guitars, some really pushy moments and you’re off to a winner!

what i didn’t like :(

i thought this song was a tad short and sweet, i think they could’ve done some fun stuff to give it a lil bit more of a storytelling moment. it comes in, does what it wants and heads off and it left me wanting a bit more.

for fans of

there are so many bands that this sounds like, and that’s okay! being in a scene can be perfectly fine, but it does make it tricky for me because i want to compare it to something that sits in that sweet spot of songs you might not have listened to, but who are big enough that you might’ve heard of them. i’m gonna go with pup because i think that’s a good comparison, and also i’m going to be seeing them this evening and i’m very excited.

should you listen to more?

yeah i dig this band and think you will too. they’ve got what i might call like, label plant adjacent energy where they have a lot of the tropes of a label plant, but i don’t think they’re a label plant i just think they’re rather competent. check out the song live is crazy (like that), i like it!
