😄 pushpin / so long review

want to be the main character?

genre: indie
release date: 12/04/22
runtime: 4:02
video: no :(

good morning and welcome to a lovely summery edition of a single song review! i’ve been getting really into these tiktoks lately where it’s just like really well treated video footage of cities and like sad indie music playing, and sometimes when i ride the bus to work i see the city and think man i’m really in an indie movie right now like, i’m the main character. it’s a modest trait i must say. anyway, this weeks song is the ideal soundtrack for precisely that kind of tiktok so if you see it being used for that well, you’re welcome. meet london indie boys pushpin and their song so long.

what i liked! :)

the marching gentle intensity of this track is lovely to get lost in. the combination between the lock step guitar riff and gentle tapped bass drum is such fodder for me personally and looking out the window watching lights go by. the synchopated synth that sees this song out therefore is the perfect companion piece for a song so rigidly determined by it’s rhythmic qualities. taking a lil moment to cap off the vocal work with somthing a lil silly makes the outro an utterly deserved moment of audio goodness. on top of that, the solid mix that meshes the vocal work right into the auditory world of this song deserves a raise of a cup.

what i didn’t like :(

i think the synth work and outro is so good it’s almost a bit criminal it’s not in the song more. i get that it delivers a lovely outro moment and a great contrast to what came before, but it makes the rest of the song feel almost a touch hollow in comparison when i think there was definitely room to experiment a bit more. on top of that, a thing i really loved about this track is the world it creates, and i think if it lent into using world noise and additional breathy elements to give it’s sound room to breathe rather than needing to be so full frontal and present would’ve given it an extra layer of complexity it would’ve benefited from massively.

my drunk opinion :S

maybe i really am the main character. maybe i should buy a motorcycle.

for fans of :O

i totally forgot about the cinematic orchestra, which is a massive l for me if i’m honest, but this band reminded me of to build a home and i got to go have a lil cry over that it was very cathartic.

should you listen to more :?

yeah this band is sick! well, their other stuff is v not like this, it’s a lot of indie nonsense but you know what sometimes that’s good, like right now, now is one of those times!

more we’ve been listening to

start boppin your head and don’t you stop kiddo

one of those synth lines you can just whistle
