ultramarine double bill?

genre: indie / pop / rock
release date: 26/08/23
runtime: 4:13
video: no :(

so this week we’ve done something not entirely unintentionally, but it is kinda funny. this is the second song in a row that has the title ultramarine? what’s with that, no idea. anyway, this song absolutely rocks. it’s a slightly twee indie rock song with a ton of cool stuff going on as well as a huge amount of emotion it calmly wears on it’s sleeve. meet eutherians (ultramarine) by london band me rex.

what i liked! :)

the way this song takes a pair of melodies and just works them and works them and works them is really well done. it’s like the auditory equivalent of pulling taffy or something. most of the vocal work, riffs, hooks and structure are based on these two contrasting melodies each worked again and again through the song. it’s a really cool exercise in development that pays off massively particularly in the outro. it’s not just the construction either, the melodies, instrumentation and vocal work really sell this. when the gang vocals come inparticular in the fakeout first chorus where there’s a big build and then it goes aha! finger guns. it’s all really well written and pulled together by a band that know exactly what they’re doing.

what i didn’t like :(

some of my favourite vocal work in this is when the main two vocalists work together like in the first chorus. i would’ve loved to hear more of that in the verse say as while i love how personable the main vocalists voice is, a bit of harmonic support would’ve given the vocals a bit more oomph.

my drunk opinion :S

i don’t know what i’m feeling with this but i sure do be feeling it i’ll tell you what

for fans of

this band kinda remind me of a few acts, which is cool but also tricky because there’s a lot going on and i don’t want to do any of it a disservice. for example you’ve got the indie pop of the likes of twenty one pilots but also a bit of the ol’ heartfelt mewithoutyou. really though it’s reminding me of this song i can’t dance by my idea which is a of all a bop, and b, doing a lot of similar things.

should you listen to more?

oh dude me rex need to be on your radar i’ll tell you that much for free. absolutely banging band who i’ve seen live once and really think you should too. they’ve got a lot of cool ideas and songwriting and they’re absolutely manic on stage. good times had by all.
