😄 rénovations - euphoria review

need to get a bit grungy?

another week, another tune for you, and this week we’ve got a real gem. what do you get when you drag grunge out of whatever pit it’s been lurking in, latch on the connections from a car battery and boot it off a cliff with a parachute in the shape and size of a macy’s day parade balloon in the shape of bart simpsons head. no idea but i can’t wait to find out. in the meantime, here’s euphoria by rénovations, a song that almost feels like that sounds.

what i liked! :)

this song keeps you guessing and guessing and guessing. in that light and fuzzy little intro, you might be so foolish as to think to yourself ooh, we could be in for something dancy and trancey, a nice 4 on the floor and off we go. well that’s where you’d be wrong, bucko. we’re riffin, we’re spiffin and oh, hell, just when you thought this was a boogey little track, we’ve got a breakdown. there’s a lot going on here musically, and all of it lands more or less. a lot of that is aided by the high degree of creativity going into the glu-ing elements that stitch together sections, which is well handled. a great example is at 3:35 where they combine effects on the drums with some out of context audio to land the breakdown.

what i didn’t like :(

the constant double vocal thing didn’t quite land for me. they’re clearly aiming for something rather effect heavy and layered, but it’s not quite there. there’s definitely something textural and interesting to be had, just needs a bit more work to make it land.

i feel like this song needs to be heard in a place where the walls are wet

hey you know who this sounds like? h.i.m., remember them? i certainly do, and this is pressing a lot of those buttons.

should you listen to more?

this song is definitely on the stronger end of the spectrum of this bands repertoire. they clearly are putting a lot of effort into landing that grunge + electronic but not nu metal why are you asking sound, and they’re getting there. their older stuff though might be worth a skip.
