😄 sheer mag / expect the bayonet review

expecting it?

genre: rock
release date: 02/06/23
runtime: 2:47
video: no but they do have a kexp (without this song)

sometimes the trickiest part of these reviews is the first few words. what do you go with? start with a lil jokey joke? a hello? a who goes there! or maybe you just dive in with a lil story. whatever you’re doing, you can expect you’ll get some kind of response. one other thing you can count on is you can expect the bayonet. the song, this weeks song, we don’t do actionable threats, just songs by bands and artists. like sheer mag, writer of this weeks song.

what i liked! :)

this band is really refreshing. they’re doing something a lil different and doing it with a lot of style and character and it just comes off really genuine. let’s grab the obvious win here which is the vocal, the fuzzed out but absolutely belted vocal work is so cool and distinctive. the clarity with which the lyrics manage to cut through that much treatment speaks massively to this vocalists talent. on top of all of that, the composition of the song really makes it all land. the tom heavy drum pattern, fun and funky riffs and mid tempo swing turn this song from a really well done affair to something that knows what it wants to do and it’s not waiting around for permission. god bless.

what i didn’t like :(

i guess my only real complaint about this song is it doesn’t really go. like it’s got a lot of energy and power in it, but very little of that translates through to the musicality and so there are times where this feels a little disjointed. a bit more intricacy here and there and perhaps a bit of flair in the musicianship would give it a lot more of a solid foundation for that killer vocal.

for fans of :D

so while listening through a few songs to see what fits, i came across this banger from gardenhead and casey bolles which has a lot of similarities, but also does what i wish this song did more of. you’ve got the killer vocal, heart wrenching lyrics and great mid tempo groove, but there’s just that extra bit of oomph and energy in the instrumentation in the form of backing vocals, drum fills and dynamics and it works just a lil better.

my drunk opinion :S

hell yeah dude bayonets a comin stabby stab

should you listen to more :?

this is a band that has an idea and is not afraid to run with it. their discogrpahy has a ton of songs like this, altho this is one of the standouts. that massive vocal is there, as is the somewhat mid instrumentation. great song tho, i really enjoyed it and when i first heard it i was like oooo gotta tell the newsletter, so here we are!
