hey i don’t know about anyone else lately but i’ve been looking for a way to just totally zone out for quite a bit and i think i’ve found it. shout out to one of our subscribers here at a single song review, because this week we’re taking a little bit of us time, that’s right. so, a thing we’ve done here before is what we call guided listening, we’ve gone on walks, gone to sweaty basements, climbed on roofs but this week? this week, we’re going into a nice quiet room, we’re getting headphones on and i do mean headphones, not speakers, not airpods, headphones. and we’re getting down into it. lights off, eyes closed, and really focus on this one because act 2: amitsun is a stunning little experiment in minimalistic tones and takes you by the hand for every second of it’s runtime. in the voice of mario, very very quietly and gently, let’s a go.

and before we get to the review, reminder, only 6 days left…

this song keeps you guessing for it’s entire runtime. you can never quite tell what it’s playing with, whether it be instruments or life sounds or some blend of the two. that gentle approach of pursuing textures and tones without being adherent to any kind of attempt to make this sound ‘normal’ per say is what makes it so unique. every second of these 5 minutes feels new and interesting.

the way it builds tension is so interesting too, the long drawn out melodic swooping noises hold themselves above the tense rhythmic ideas and the sense of a beat being introduced which feels like it goes on longer than it actually does. the reason i’m telling you to listen to this with headphones is because there is so much fun and interesting stuff going on with location positioning.

the tense metallic jittering and clattering hovering around and within the different positions around your ear crowd out and build tension. all of this makes the introduction of the piano sounds in the last minute break like a wave upon a rock. you’ll have felt this one growing and teasing up, only for it all to wash out with a gentle chord progression. honestly there’s so much that this song does and does with ease, it feels like the kind of music you hear on a movie by denis villneuve.

i bet this artist could’ve really gone somewhere massive with this. i’m picturing something absolutely gigantic and brutally powerful, but it didn’t, and maybe it shouldn’t! maybe it’s okay for things to be small and gentle, maybe sometimes the time is right for the little and less rather than more and too much. maybe, but it still might’ve been rad, and maybe that’s a good thing about art, not just what things are but also what they could be or could’ve been. i dunno i just write a newsletter.

okay i’ve hacked into the mainframe, i’m seeing the codes, i’m looking at it now. yeah, yeah he’s moving towards you, get down now. okay hold. now when i say go, run down 4 doors, take a left, a right, another right and keep going until you’re back where you started. go.

i have, a rather niche comparison for this if i’m honest. it’s the song debutante by 65daysofstatic which is the song hello games use for all of the trailers for no mans sky since they annoucned it, which if you’re anywhere close to gaming you’ve probably heard before. anyway, it’s a banger, as is this weeks song, so peas in a pod methinks!

there’s a vocal section in this bands bahtera op. 5/5 which kicks off at like 1:30 and it’s so gorgeous honestly. i definitely think that you’ll find something you like in this band if you’re into your quiet melodic moody emotional stuff. the recordings are top notch and produced impeccably, and the songwriting has a tonnnn of creativity and versatility. top work!
