introducing: musician ads!

dunno about you but i’ve been a busy bee. eagle eyed among you will have spotted the launch of subscriber preferences last week (which you can access here btw), this week, another biggie; musician ads. keeping this thing going is nottttt cheap or easy let me tell you so when the advertisers you see at the top of these come a knockin, i be, well, being knocked. i want to change that, and make more of what you see here in line with the vision i had for this. so starting today, musicians can start buying ad slots in this newsletter. but not for music, that is and will always be free. instead, for all the things around making music that artists so often need support getting in front of people. specifically, gigs, musician classifieds and physical releases. check them out:

more i’ve been listening to

i’ll be honest i’ve been listening to a lottttttt of creedence

i don’t really know what was in the water when they wrote this album, but i’d like some, and by some i mean lots

sometimes one really good riff is enough to carry it, and this has a really really good riff

i have a confession to make. i have, perhaps, an incredibly uncool trait. and it comes in two parts. part one, i do genuinely have enough coats and jackets. i don’t need any more, strictly speaking. but that doesn’t mean when i’m at a cool shop where they sell cool jackets i’m not tempted, i am. and one thing that can and does and has push me over the edge is the cool walk factor. this is where i tip off the edge into dweeb kinda. if i feel like a cool guy who walks away from an explosion in a coat that kinda flows behind me like a final fantasy character well. i may have to go all in. and when i’m going all in, let me tell you, i’m listening to this. meet alt. and their track they’ve always lived in castles, it slaps, i think it’s really cool and i think you will too.

what i like

this song does notttttttt let up for like, a second. and yet, not once in the entire 4:21 runtime did i think to myself man, this is getting on a bit. i was locked tf in like a hacker getting ready to say i’m in. i even though the rapping was pretty alright even. what keeps this thing chugging along is the absolute commitment to groove. every section and verse and chorus is delivered with a sense of off tempo high energy groove perfectly designed to keep the head banging and the shoe tapping. even when the bottom falls out for the break beat bridge section, the grooving does not let up. they even tease you a bit, a nice steady 4 on the floor but what’s that? oh, you want to play do you? well that was a set up, they hit you with breakdown after breakdown all just so groovy. the production sends it home with a box of chocolates. the guitar tones are gnarly, the drums are powerful, the whole thing feels big and powerful, and it rules! long may it continue.

what i don’t like

i lied i thought the rapping was a bit naff sorry

my drunk opinion

and if i had sunglassess too, with the coat, and a big walk. like a big walk. boots too. it’s a goth number really, but like a cyber goth. like those dudes under the bridge. not the chilli peppers the other ones, the goth ones. with thomas the tank you know.

my drunk opinion

a bit further in the metal direction than these guys, but absolutely in a similar vein, bury tomorrow! who i always thought were kinda magic by how they were like, absolutely banging

this band rules man. this single is from an upcoming album, and when it drops i’m there day one because it’s so so so good.
