i’m going to start this one off by saying straight up, i*adore* this song, it is absolutely stunnign. io’m talking tingles up the neck singing on the walk down the street can’t get it out of your head make you feel ten foot tall kinda song. yes that is a massive sentance with no commas and only adjectives what are you gonna do about it. i first heard it a while ago, nd was like hey that’s decent! nice choon. then the following week it came up again in my hey that’s decent playlist where i dump anything i think is worth checking out again. then it kept coming up, and i kept being like wait i must’ve written about that surely. that’s gotta be in there i bet. then tonight, i was like hmm maybe i haven’t, so i checked and i hadn’t! so sorry for keeping this under my painfully expensive bass pro baseball cap which i now have courtesy of the cowboy shop on brick lane (shout out to those guys). meet another sky and their song the pain, a band who are maybe getting to the upper end of how big an artist i like to feature here but honestly i think that’s because they’re starting to blow up. so take it from me! i’ve called em before, i’ll call em again, and i’m calling em now this bands cooking.

i feel like a bit of a broken record talking endlessly abotu how the great vocals on a given song make it, but they really really do. like sorry, you can have the most face shredding utterly bone breaking incredibly soul turning tone and sound and whatever else. but if your vocals aren’t up to scratch then odds on it’s not gonna work. if you spent 99% of your songwriting time into honing your vocal and lyricism, you’d probably pop off a hell of a lot quicker than if you spent that time perfecting anything else. this song is a top tier example. the lyrics? singable, quotable, instantly learnable in a way that makes you want to sing along in the shower.

the performance itself? painstakingly delivered with attention to detail, a sense of growth and drama, and best of all, it’s backed by backing vocals that make it feel powerful and impactful. it even has a detail which i loved, which is that ‘honey’ lyric in the chorus is so pitch shifted up that if you’re singing along then you’re gonna get caught out, and left in the dust from this vocalist. why is that cool? my theory is that it makes the whole experience of singing along a bit of a challenge; bits of this song are super duper easy peasy, but that bit coming in off the verse? really really difficult unless you know your stuff and are better at singing than me, people staring on the bus suggest that isn’t a high bar. meanwhile, the rest of the band? well, the rest of the band are, how do we say, killing it. it’s giving groove, it’s giving drama, it’s giving big drums and heavy pushes at moments of maximum impact necessary to produce a feeling of standing on a cliff being blasted by the wind. i can’t fault it, it’s a killer track and i loved it.

i got nothin sorry gang, this song really hit that sweet spot for me and nailed it. check back next week for complaints and moans and groans galore but for this week we’re keeping it positive!

look, not only can i sing this song exceedingly well, but also, i can drive this bus too, you don’t know me, you don’t know my story, you don’t know my life! i bet i can do a flip

i’ve got a rogue one, but i’m going with the war on drugs as a comparison, simply because that band makes me feel the same way this one does, like i’m 10 feet tall and have a mullet and a flag. dunno why, but there we are, it’s a great feeling

i’m so serious when i say this band is trucking along the highway. they’re so good and i think they’re going somewhere massive. this other song of theirs which is pretty big, fall in love with the city, is just an absolute banger and it’s a song that i think about quite a lot actually. perfect for an autumn bus ride, i’m driving.
