our discord is actually really popping off at the minute, we’ve added a ton of new sections for artists to find people to work with, get tips and tricks on how to get gud, and been showing off records.

got a blistering wee song for you this week, and it is an absolute banger actually. it’s doing a lot of really interesting things that i haven’t heard done to this degree before since i think ever? meet bowling shoes, an indie band from america somewhere idk that’s not important right now. what’s important is they have salmonella. by which i mean they have a song called salmonella, a weird experimental pop song with tons and tons of detail and i think you should check it out!

there are so many wicked cool ideas in this song and every one of them is executed so cleverly but before we get to any of that, i want to talk about the vocal track. this is without doubt one of the most top tier absolutely banging performances i’ve heard in a minute and a half. it’s got personality, it’s got vocal fry, it’s got energy and it does not back down from being absolutely killer. it’s also such a great foundation for everything else this song is doing. the treatment of the vocals is such an exercise in extra and i love every second of it. the blown out, massive vocal with all the sprinkly fiery bits on top is so killer and mixed in with that performance it works so so well. honestly when i first heard this i properly stopped in my tracks it’s amazing. on top, or rather, all around that massive vocal is a set of instrumentation that has brazen joy emblazened on it’s soul. the groovy funky rhythmn section hit hard without even trying, they’re just like that got a problem with it take it up with your mum. the little bits of detail jump in and out like a clown clapping and the whole thing has the energy of something done with joy, it rules.

my only real problem is that this song is so short. the sort of, post chorus? around the 1:30 mark is really sweet, it gives the kind of heartfelt lowered down middle 8 that gets people crying in the club and i thought they could’ve done a bit more with it. contrast an in depth moment like that with all the big nasty noisiness all around and you’d be looking at an absolute top tier banger.

right not to put too fine a point on it, but one time i got salmonella (i think?) and look let me tell you i didn’t eat for like, 3 weeks or something mad. then, the first day i felt better i went out to a party with someone i was dating and the party was being ran by their ex? and i was just there, with this person i was seeing, sick as a dog but pretending i was fine in that persons ex’s flat and the ex’s flatmate is like i went to school with your sister? this was in another country btw, so like, what the hell was going on. anyway, i’d forgotten completely about that night until now.

i’m not sure if this is a perfect comparison, but it’s pretty good. i’ve been hunting around for a bit for sometihng that combines the high energy sense of fun and excitement with mad treated vocals performed by someone on top of their game, and i’ve settled on survivor by genesis owusu, a song which absolutely rules so not afraid to be suggesting it.

so this act has a fair few other tracks, and i like some of them. some of them are pretty big too, like millions of listens big but this? this feels different. they have a lot of like, quintessential indie nonsense in there which, god bless, but this is a big step creatively for this band. if there’s more to come along these lines then sign me tf up because this rules and i want more. i rekcon you will too

cosmorat / backseat baby this is kinda giving theatre kids and or broadway, but that’s not a bad thing when it’s done with this level of personality.

aziya / chain i’ve talked before about songs have like, timeless choruses where the first time you hear it you feel like you’ve heard it a million times before well. this is one of those songs, absolute banger.

dora jar / puppet i can’t remember why i noted this song down as one for the newsletter, but i know i had a reason. anyway, i’ve forgotten it while being lost in the groovy funky acousticy goodness this has going on, so i’m sure it had sometihng to do with all that.
