kicking this one off right away by saying it unequivocally - this weeks song slaps. it goes. it rocks. it , ticks? idk? basically, it is the thing, it does it, it be the thing today. it’s really good. and even better, it was sent in by a subscriber and has a tiny listenship which means you, dear reader, are getting in on the ground floor of a grade a banger. also, thought this was odd, this song came out the day before last weeks song. thought that was funny! anyway!!! meet mdrnluvrs and their track madeleine, it’s a kinda lo fi indie rock beast of a track complete with not one, but two violin solos, a piano interlude, and a vocal track that made me sad inside in the good way and not the bad way.
there’s a lottttt going on in this, and all of it rules. both, yes, i said that, i said that correctly; both of the violin solos in this are absolutely face meltingly sick. but not only that, the way the second one in particular is laid up and then swooped into melodically from the piano interlude? dude that’s inspired. like properly, you don’t get shit like that these days, people too busy with eat hot chip and lie, but here? damn. also, a piano trill? in the year of our lord 2 thousand and 2 4? you know it, it’s happening, it’s happening on your street lock the doors. very cool, very interesting and very fun.
i haven’t even properly gotten into the song really those moments were just so baller and fun. off the back of them, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the rest of the song is sort of whatever but that’s where you’d be wrong bucko. the rest of the song rules. for one thing, you’ve got a really well crafted track that feels high energy and interesting and happenin’, but at no point do you feel rushed or overwhelmed, it’s got energy but it’s not in your face about it. melodically this song doesn’t rest either. the amount of riffs and melodies and interesting interpretations of ideas you heard earlier is dizzying. and finally, the song itself. the lyrics, the vocal performance are right in that sweet spot of getting you to identify with the track and the song writer in a way that makes it feel personal and real. idk madeleine, but i kinda wish i did now!
i think the mix in this song is a swing and a miss. i think, it might be going for a lo fi aesthetic, which is cool! but i don’t think it applies in this instance, or at the very least has been applied too thick. the amount of detial on display here, the intricacies and ways these different ideas work into each other is really let down by the fact this is kinda muddy. i think a bit more clarity here would’ve really helped this song pop. it still does pop, but it could pop more is what i’m saying.
i’ve talked before about staring out bus window songs right? well, this is a top tier one, but it’s also a bit of a power walk song. basically, this song is a journey song, for journeying
i racked my brain on this quesiton for quite some time actually, and i think the answer is this band really reminds me of waterparks, but if waterparks were a lotttttt more interesting. and waterparks are interesting! they do a lot of interesting stuff with their music, but this track right here is cooking on gas in a way that fits within that vein but breezes past it at high speed.
the ep this song is from has soooo much interesting stuff going on. with a ton of cool tracks, some cracking vocals and some really interesting songwriting. i think we’re onto a live one here gang, i think they could really pop off if given time to work out the production kinks and get things up and running.
