right before we get into this weeks review i needdddddddddddddddddddd to tell you about the night i just had. i need to, it’s a necessity. don’t worry, got a song coming in a sec, it’s a bop be patient. right so, it was my housemates birthday yesterday, and we went to this polish restaurant to celebrate. the waiter, who was a sweetheart and a king and i love him, was just like hanging out with us while we ordered or whatever. but at some point the vibe shifted for the better. i don’t know who said it, certainly wasn’t me, but someone said something about like the gym or weightlifting, and this guy, this guy man. he’s like oh yeah, i weight lift, look at my medals and out of nowhereeeee produces these like gold medals for weightlifting with, a muscle bound wolf? on them? and starts showing everyone his weight lifting videos. and then, just drops into the convo that he’s the world record holder for the bench press? and shows us his record breaking bench! insane. absolutely deranged. not long after he shows us his gym playlist, and it’s alllll early 00s dance songs like born slippy and barbie, which he is vibing to. singing, dancing, just feeling his oats. i love him and adore him and i think he’s the best.

anyway, that was my evening, i am now full of good food and vibes and this weeks song! ha! brought it back baby. this is anotherrrrrrrrr subscriber submitted banger, restitution by young(in) which if you don’t mind, we are simply going to get into because it rules. has nothing to do with that waiter btw, that was a total other thing.

what i like

what i like

there’s a very clever thing happening in this song, which is the musical backing makes such a perfect contrast to the main vocal, it sandwhiches the banging performance from this performer between a buttery smooth groove and a super abrasive sax. the result is your brain focus on the gab between which is where this performer goes to work. i love love love when someone can handle going from being out of character to in performance on a dime and the intro to this track is a masterclass in that. by spinning this song round on it’s head and laning straight in you leave no room for error, grabbing the audiences attention in one swift move. the degree to which you are locked in with this song depends entirely on how much you enjoy the tone and energy of the performance, which is to say you should be very because very very, it’s immaculate. all of the anunciation, the tone, the speed it’s all perfect for not only getting the message and story and poetry across to you but for keeping you present and accounted for. all of this tone and mood setting is then turned on it’s head towards the latter third of the song when it turns itself right upside down and shifts the energy with a wholly different musical accompaniment to some absolutely killer lyrics that land the message of the song with both feet. it’s a really cool moment that works so well because it invests in itself to produce the kind of moment that make you sit up and take notice. it also makes it so much more real when the performance almost runs out of steam and you get some normal voice talking which reflects into some tv audio.

what i don't like

what i don’t like

i’m really strugglign with this section because i think this song came in, did what it set out to do, made it’s point and then left. sometimes a song can just do that and it’s great, and this one did just that. that all said, as much as i lvoed the vaporwave aesthetics of the main beat, i felt like the mix on that could’ve done ith another pass in the studio. something just to enmesh the sax and rhythmn section to tone down the abrasion a smidge and cohere it together, without losing the particualr affect that this song achieves.

my drunk opinion

my drunk opinion

i don’t really know what restitution meants and at this point i’m afraid to ask

for fans of

my drunk opinion

right once i clocked the incredibly obvious vaporwave influences on this song, i couldn’t get them out of my head. so then, i wound up losing myself scrolling through different acts being like, what’s a good comparison here, my knowledge of where hip hop and vaporwave meet is like, nil! however, the latter half of this song is justtttt like that one blank banshee song which i think saves me in this instance

should you listen to more

i had a great time checking out this artist and i think you will to. lots and lots of great tracks, lots of really clever songwriting like what we had displayed here. the song minor player is a really interesting one you should listen to, doing some really odd stuff with beats but again, it really works. i think this si an artist that’s working their way towards something that is going to be absolutely massive and while these tracks are really really good, the potential here is jaw dropping. i think the stars are gonna align on this one i really really do.
