got a big one for you all this week. a song that genuinely made me stop in my tracks and go wow. that doesn’t happen that often! or, it does semi regularly becuase then i write this little newsletter for you all and that’s really cute. anyway, slightly bigger song from a slightly bigger artist than usual, but you all seemed to really enjoy last time i did that so look at me not respecting boundaries that aren’t enforced. anywho, meet grace ives, singer, producer, extrodinaire and their track dance with me, big tune! enjoy :)
it’s a big moment, the first bar of your chorus. in any given song, it’s almost make or break. it’s not an easy thing to do, let alone land. how do you, the artist, convince the listener that the preamble, the set up, the getting there, was worth it? with this. the moment, the beginning of the main of the gravy and steak or whatever. my suggestion is to take a page out of this artists book, and do it feet first and with gusto. taking the entire musical world that you’ve established and forcing it full frontal into a lyric that is so catchy, so immediately understood.
it’s a powerful move and boy do i love it here. but what about the rest of the song? well, the rest of the song is, brilliant. it’s so clever and creative crafting a soundscape that uses a tight little groove comprised almost entirely of either performed or sampled ye older sounding tones and instruments. that contrast is, of course, done to death by so many artists, but here it’s so powerful and exciting. especially the outro where we get that whole moment of the piano just exploring a bunch of ideas before calling it quits and zipping out. there’s so much creativity and interesting ideas on display here and boy do i love them.
i thought the vocal performance throughout this was really strong and controlled, giving us a character positively bristling with energy. that i loved dealy however i would have enjoyed quite a bit hearing this vocalist really going for it a bit and giving us something from the chest. a big moment to contrast all the tension would’ve felt really cool.
this is standing on a restaurant table singing territory
actually, a really good comparison here is nilüfer yanya, a really cool artist and a really great songwriter also tearing it up in this sort of alt pop scene. big fan!
i’m a big big fan of this artist. they’ve got a lot to love, and the album this song is from is top top tier, big recommend! i think this is an artist we’ll be hearing a lot about over the coming years and i, for one, am excited both because i think they rule but also for you. after all, you heard them here first!
or better yet, reply to this email! what did you think of this song?
