i’m keeping on this shoegaze kick we’ve had running a little bit because man, am i in a mood to stear into static. i don’t like sharing too much on here as to what’s all going on behind the curtain, but lifes all a bit, y’know, etc. and what’s been helping me a lot has been getting some riffs going that are a - heavy, and b- pretty melody. well boy do i have some great news about this weeks artist, because they, well, they’re bringing it in spades.
a thing i talk about a lot on these reviews and even on last weeks review was all about having one big clear melody or hook can do so much for a song that’s got the vibes and ambience of their sound down. even better if that melody can be worked directly into the song in a way that feels cohesive and intentional because it not only gives the listener something to focus on and enjoy, but also in how it gives all that fun washy drama around the melody a reason to exist beyond just kinda sounding cool. this song is a quintessential example of both of those things. the main chorus melody is massive, catchy, achingly simple and delivered with both barrels. it’s an incredibly powerful moment that delivers the kind of energy to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand straight up. there’s a lot about it that makes it work. the drums for example, show some really interesting and fun ideas. the super duper simple rhythms running through fuzz is such a great idea, as it bings together all of the tones and timbre of the big gain heavy guitar and the half whispered vocals. that gelling together of the sound makes something that glues together and washes into itself, becoming super sludgy. this background, serving as the platter on which the hook of the chorus are served up only serves to absolutely massively amplify the power of that melody.
what this band does so well is investing time and energy into making payoff moments worth it. my only gripe with this song is i think the melody in the hook is so good, i almos wish they spent more time on developing the world before it. roll out the red carpet, make the entrance feel like a frog boiling in water, give it the whole thing to lead up to that melody even mroe than they did. there’s so much tone and beautiful energy going into crafting the world of this, i wish they’d just spent a bit more time wallowing in all that mud before giving you the crown jewels.
this song feels like how i imagine flying a biplane feels like if you take off them wee goggles and those hats with the ear bits and do a dive
d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-deftonesssssss this band reminded me of deftones. they actually reminded me of a lot of bands, a lot of big ol shoegaze bands that do this kind of thing really well, but i think deftones have what you sometimes hear described as ‘the juice’ - some kind of indescribable quality of being really really cool. i think this and they have that in common.
i think this song is a real stand out from this artist, but i think the rest of their stuff is pretty cool too. they’ve got some really nice stuff on the go, but this is a head and shoulder above track. it’s a pretty new one from them, so i hope it’s a sign of things to come.
