happy new year! let’s gooooo with a bit of a bop, why not? now i won’t lie, this song is a bit of an off kilter pop song., but it’s got a lot going for it that i really like and i think you will too. meet marci and her song stop, a mid tempo and chill pop song with a ton of creativity, even more cool energy and makes the case for smoking a cigarette while cutting the grass. i don’t know what i mean by that, but i stand by it.

let’s talk about the percussion in this because it rules. the tight drum patterns combined with the expressive use of ghost hits and detailed beats give such a great sense of texture and presence, while also taking time to lean into the main narrative of the song, giving key moments that extra little kick. the outro really makes it too, with the addition of a subtle ride cymbal to really elevate the section. this song is really an exercise in detail, with tons and tons of little bits and bobs added in with care and precision. the fizzly electronic elements, the stabby piano, the guitar slides, the operatic singing? (???) all added with a bit of sugar, spice and everything nice.

i didn’t feel like this song knew what to do with it’s tone entirely. like there’s a lot of stuff here that all is added in with a lot of sense of purpose, but there’s very little being done to blend those elements together into something cohesive. instead, you’ve got this broad brush approach to ideas and concepts, but no additions of verb or delay or anything really to make it wash out as one piece. the result is that some of the secitons feel rather blocky and vst-y, where it’s really obvious they had a section with a thing, and the section ends so so does the thing.

pop is so hard man like, i’ve talked about this a ton but getting pop to land is the hardest genre there is. it’s so precise, but yet utterly ill defined. it’s definitely the kind of thing that needs a lot of care and attention to get right, and if you don’t get it you know but how to make it happen is for minds better than mine i’ll tell you that one for free.

this song really reminded me of ok love you bye by olivia dean, which the more i listen to the two the more i think is a good comparison. you’ve got the main bits, killer vocals, some really well designed drum work, but the additionals like the brass and choral elements on olivias track really mirror what this song is doing. also, olivia dean rules.

this artist has a lot of good stuff, and has been cooking for a while. there’s definitely something here, do i think it’s quite there yet? maybe not, but i also don’t think it’s a million miles off. the artistry and talent here is really strong, the songwriting is great and the talent is obvious, but i don’t think they’re quite there yet. i do think however, it’s only a short hop and a skip before they are.
