in this review, i’m going to talk about a thing that i find in music semi regularly, and for some reason, it aboslutely reaches deep into my brain and grasps tightly on the yes please pole, and gives it a spin in a figure of 8 pattern. why? i do not know, but it’s something that really, really gets me in the rightest of ways. and you can get a great two handed feel for precisely that, by way of this weeks song by the moody orchestra, and their song on beyond, which is this weeks song! right, now that i’ve led you down the garden path towards my perfect place to take a normal photo here with my family, that i will really be taking, let’s get started.

it’s a three beat kick pulse that just goes and goes. i don’t know why, but it does something to me and this song? not gonna lie to you, it does it so well. like, i’m all for syncopation, interesting drums, rhythmic patterns and producing all kinds of cool sounding things by breaking up patterns and making all kinds of stuff. but equally, sometimes i like colouring in the lines, and outside the lines, and everything in. this song does two things with that motif, the first is it never quite lets up the tempo, even towards the back half of the song where it eases off a bit before the sitar comes in and it kinda goes for it, enough of the presence of that rhythmn is maintained that you don’t just know it’s there, you feel it on a deep level. on top of that really sick rhythmn, this song has a lot going on working in and aroudn the edges. i just watched a video from a dog show of a border collie absolutely smashing a course (which you can watch here btw it’s so sick) but i thoguht actually the slalolm thing is a good metaphor for this song. bobbing and weaving in and out of a clear and constant rhythmic idea to landing bits and bobs. it’s not even just the vocal and main harmony being delivered, a thing i love about this song is the little details that peak in on the top looking down on the action before departing again. the little guitar warbles and riffs that just flicker in and out add a rich sense of personality to this, and keep it sounding rich and interesting.

i’m not thinking about last weeks song and the speed up speed down thing, i promise. that said, however, i do think this song was at it’s best when it had a bit more of a frentic and aggressive energy going on, and alls i’m saying is you could achieve a lot of that by just dialling up the speed a little, that’s all, not saying any more than that, just that that’s all.

bumbum bu bumbum bu bumbum bu bumbum bu bumbum sitar solo yeah
cool song

so, i did a little digging, and i think i’ve managed to pinpoint where my weird obsession with this kind of rhythmn began? and actually, it’s one of the best examples, and also it sounds quite like this song but a bit more bleep bloop-y, and a bit less guitariar-y, if you know what i mean. it’s what went down by foals specifically the bridge coming out into the final chorus, it absolutely slaps.

i’ll be honest, when i checked this artist out initially i was like uhhh i dunno man, it’s not giving oh man oh boy oh gee. let me tell you though, i was wrong! this artist is really sick, and really only getting started in their career, with some really cool stuff out already. the song mangela he! is really sick, check that one out.

linka moja / blood orange look, using an acoustic guitar in a rock song, and making it work and deliver a big old track? it’s a powerful thing to do, it’s a brave thing to do, it’s a strong thing to do and you know what? when it works, it absolutely works. like this one.
