so i’ve mentioned this a few times, but it’s my ambition this year to not only be sending you all some killer tracks by underground artists, but also! to make sure that you’re getting a good broad brush of different genres and styles and ideas. i’m a lil worried that the last few months haven’t been as varied for those purposes as i’d like, so i’ve been combing through the submitted songs and searching for ones that are a bit different from what we’ve had, while still being killer.

that’s where murty comes in, with a chill as hell hip hop / r’n’b track called late nights that i really enjoyed vibing away to.

the guitar tone in this song is absolutely gorgeous. managing to hit that sweet spot of really bright delicate tones while also being super beefy and full of presence. it’s not easy to hit a tone like that and it speaks to the a* production this song enjoys across the board. everything feels big, powerful and delivered with a sense of scale that a song that isn’t trying to hard to be intense doesn’t need to deliver, but does anyway.

the real standouts here though are the vocal harmonies, taking time to just deploy themselves here and there, making each instance of harmony sound killer, but not sticking around too long so they become annoying or anything. they’re really great little moments that make you sit up and pay attention. the percussion too does a great job of sprinkling in little bits of detail, in particular in the verses.

it’s very easy for songs like this to just rack up a lil beat there and let it cycle while the rest of the song does the heavy lifting, but not here. instead, you’ve got a great little example of a song taking that as a foundation and then making sure to work with it and develop out the detail that makes the song feel alive. it’s the little things, the little details that really make this song work

the thing that drew me the most to this song though, was the way the chorus and the hook have been both crafted to a stellar quality while also landing in without making you notice it. every part of this song feels like a natural development of every other part, the chorus being no exception. when the chorus lands in you don’t notice it’s begun, but by the time it heads off to pastures anew you can’t help but be singing away at it.

i really wasn’t a fan of how this song just ends without developing out into much more than what it achieves by the end of the main a section. there’s not much in the way of a bridge or a development, nor is there a real contrast between the main message of the song and anything else. it means that by the time the song ends it’s just like, oh, there it goes. bye

look, i’m not saying this reminds me of the euphoria soundtrack, however, i did have a vivid flashback to the scene when jules spots that the guy she’s talking to’s dad is the other guy she’s been sleeping with, and it caused a factory reset in my brain a little because that scene is so funny.

so i had to go hunting a little bit to find a good comparison because nothing sprung to mind, which was a good exercise for me because it shows where the big gaps in my musical knowledge are. player’s ball by outkast to me aligned a lot with what this song was doing, so i went for that and then spent another hour listening to outkast who are so damn good. major l on my part for not listening to them more.

i really like this artist, they’ve got a lot of cool stuff going on. some of their stuff is a lot more boisterous and high energy than this, but it’s all still really really good. that said, i still think this is this artists best song so far, but they’re also getting started in their career relatively speaking so that’s a great sign.

sesame girl / hey x there’s a moment in this where the rest of the music kind of warps in via the fuzz from a guitar underneath the vocal, and it’s so sick.
