hi didly ho there neighbours this week i have a song for you that fully stopped me in my tracks. i was doing my usual, running through some playlists here and there of music that’s, as we know and love, off the beaten track. and this song hit me like a little small tiny, really, just so small, bus, like for clowns perhaps. as it bumped gently into my forehead with the force of a large boulder the size of a small boulder, it really got to me. and i think that’s pretty neat, so let’s listen to it together. meet n33t and their song from a few years ago, nothing. the song, the songs called nothing.
i feel bad about this section because, frankly, it’s my job to accurately articulate what it is i feel about a song and what makes it a great track. and there’s a lot here that i like, and i’ll get into in a second, but there’s also something about it that really hit me and made me feel something i can’t quiteeeee put my finger on. i tihnk it’s the heavy piano hits in the chorus. i think so, they really just i dunno are scratching a part of my brain very nice and thoroughly i feel like a bear in the woods on a great tree. that contrast against the high and snappy drum kit hovering around the breakbeat patter is really effective. it creates such a distance and space between the instrumentation and in the song. i really really like it all. i also really felt the vocal performance in this song in a way i’ve not heard in a while. like the singer is singing from their soul rather than just their like lungs or whatever. it’s a really personable song that really lands gently and with grace.
i’m going to go for it being the drums in this one. the drums in this don’t quite land it for me. i think what it is is the general lack of embelleshment. the whole song is dripping with detail from the electronic elements to the more analogue guitars or the backing vocals, there’s a lot here. the breakbeats that make up the bulk of the track are fun and interesting, but they don’t stray into anything overly expressive or detailed and i think that’s a lost opportunity here. a bit more of all of that would really elevate that performance quite a bit.
it’s giving hanging round the mall
this track reminded me of a few big tunes, but one that seems to make me feel similarly like i’m starting into the void that just winked at me, is longing by sam gellaitry which opens up a bit more than this, and has a rad little solo
i didn’t realise i came so late to the party on this artist until i sat down to write this. this song came out a few years ago, and since they’ve been putting out some really solid stuff. i think that’s pretty cool of me to be somewhat on the ground floor of their career, but more importantly, very cool of them to still be releasing and cooking things up. long may that continue.
or better yet, reply to this email! what did you think of this song?
