it has reached that time again! i do really enjoy making these, and it seems like you all like them too? i sure hope so, cus i’m gonna keep making them. also this months has fallen on a review day, so i will have the normal review out later this week, and the premium review the day after that. it is also the end of the quarter, meaning in the meantime, sink your teeth into this playlist!

as ever, i’ve tried to steer it more towards the mainstream, shooting towards new songs from fairly large artists. it is largely either stuff i’ve been listening to, or stuff closely related but firmly within that sphere of popularity. the quickfire round is where the real off the beaten track stuff is. in any event, music is music, and this is good music.

what did you think of this latest playlist?

diving deep into our march ‘24 mixtape

oh well / caity baser

opening with caity baser's oh well, we are immediately immersed in the world of modern pop with an indie twist. baser’s work typifies the diy ethos of indie pop, characterized by catchy hooks and relatable lyrics, often coupled with an underlying tone of emotional authenticity. this genre thrives on its appeal to personal introspection and its grassroots approach to production.

escapism. - live at the royal albert hall / raye, the heritage orchestra

next, raye and the heritage orchestra’s escapism. offers a lavish fusion of orchestral pop and r&b. recorded live at the iconic royal albert hall, it merges the soulful elements of r&b with the grandiosity of orchestral arrangements, creating a genre-bending experience that transcends the conventional boundaries of studio recording.

dream job / yard act

yard act’s dream job dives into the realm of post-punk. defined by its angular guitar riffs, driving basslines, and socio-politically charged lyrics, post-punk is a genre that emerged as a musically diverse response to the raw simplicity of punk rock, adding depth and complexity to the punk ethos.

double standards (feat. sampha) / ghetts, sampha

in double standards, ghetts and sampha bring forth a blend of grime and neo-soul. grime, a genre born out of east london's early 2000s urban scene, combines rapid breakbeats, gritty lyrical delivery, and electronic influences. when juxtaposed with sampha's smooth neo-soul vocals, known for its classic soul resonance mixed with contemporary r&b, the track becomes an intriguing genre hybrid.

bad woman / paloma faith

paloma faith’s bad woman offers a contemporary take on blue-eyed soul, a subgenre of soul and r&b that emerged in the 1960s. it is characterized by its soulful vocal style, drawing from the emotion-laden delivery of soul music, while often performed by artists outside the genre's african american roots.

self / by cleo sol

cleo sol's self is a beautiful representation of neo-soul. this genre is marked by a smooth, rich sound that combines elements of soul, jazz, and hip-hop. neo-soul is often infused with organic sounds, introspective lyrics, and a heavy emphasis on vocalist expression.

monaco / ride

monaco by ride shifts gears into the realm of shoegaze. a genre named for the introspective stance musicians would take, looking down at their effect pedals, shoegaze is characterized by its ethereal mixture of obscured vocals, guitar distortion, and overwhelming volume, creating a lush soundscape of noise and melody.

stranger in these times / sum 41

pop-punk stalwarts sum 41's stranger in these times harks back to the early 2000s with its infectious energy. pop-punk combines the speed and simplicity of punk rock with the catchy melodies of pop music, often addressing themes of teenage angst and rebellion.

motherfucker / sarah shook & the disarmers

delving into alternative country with sarah shook & the disarmers’ motherfucker, we encounter a genre that blends traditional country music with other musical styles, such as punk, indie rock, and folk. it's known for its storytelling lyrics and twangy instrumentation but diverges from mainstream country with its often edgier, raw sound.

damn gloves / serpentwithfeet, ty dolla $ign, yanga yaya

damn gloves introduces a modern take on r&b and soul, where serpentwithfeet's experimental approach to music brings in ethereal and avant-garde elements, and ty dolla $ign adds a touch of hip-hop influenced r&b. it's a fusion that highlights the genre’s versatility and its ability to embrace innovation.

would you come to my funeral / crawlers

the track by crawlers brings us into the world of alternative rock. this genre is a broad umbrella that encompasses various styles of rock music that emerged from the independent music underground of the 1980s. it's defined by its embrace of non-conventional rock sounds, often incorporating diverse influences and experimenting with song structures.

as we continue through the playlist with artists like lucy rose, jade bird, g flip, frank carter & the rattlesnakes, and l devine, we traverse through folk, electronic-infused pop, punk rock, and electro-pop respectively. each artist contributes a unique thread to the genre tapestry, illustrating the immense variety within the music landscape today. from the socially conscious lyrics of punk to the danceable beats of electro-pop, this playlist reflects the multifaceted nature of modern music. it underscores how genres can inform one another, leading to the emergence of new sounds and the evolution of established ones.

in sum, the playlist is a vibrant collection that offers not just a listening experience but a journey through the musical genres that color our world. it exemplifies the way music continues to be a living, breathing entity, ever-adaptive to the rhythms of cultural change and the beats of artistic innovation. whether you’re a casual listener or a discerning audiophile, this playlist beckons you to explore the rich landscape of contemporary music, one genre at a time.
