review-cember's penultimate drop
playlist-cember has nearly come to a close, and so has december itself, and come to think of it, the year as well. when i wrote that sentance i was really channeling that guy who makes those videons being like park up the fan, i’ve got the pints and the fish and chips, a bosh. been thinking about that guy a little bit as i prepared this. reviews 2024, every track i’ve reviewed this year.
just for the record, i really tried this year to diversify as much as possible. in previous years a complaint had been made by several subscribers that some of the songs were a bit samey, so this year i made a few changes. i went out of my way to find things that wouldn’t be in keeping with what we’d had previously. i made an effort to platform artists from backgrounds and areas that we hadn’t covered before. i rejected songs that were too similar to what we’d had beforehand. but more than anything else, i spent so so much time in the database of all the songs that were submitted, scowering through them all and listening to just about every one. and you know what? maybe some of these songs did turn out a lil similar, you be the judge, but the ones sent in by subscribers were a cut above the rest. seriously, there’s something magic happening in there. so, from this little review writer to all of you, but especially all of you who submitted your track, keep ‘em coming, don’t stop now, let’s do more more more, abosh.
next week, i’ll send you every song that didn’t make the cut, and you can tell me all about the ones i should’ve picked. but in the meantime, here’s the ones i did.
what did you think of this latest playlist?do you want more like this? less like this? something else than this? let us know! |

find new music 2025: exploring emerging subgenres and global sounds
as 2025 comes to a close, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the year’s most exciting musical trends. my playlist highlights an array of innovative subgenres, each representing a unique corner of the global music scene. the uk post-punk revival continues to blend angular guitars and driving rhythms with introspective lyricism, echoing the energy of bands like joy division while addressing contemporary themes. in contrast, crank wave delivers visceral, high-octane soundscapes, combining emo, hardcore, and experimental textures for a cathartic listening experience.
new york city remains a hub of creativity with its gritty indie rock, melding urban storytelling with jangly guitars and punk-inspired energy. similarly, boston indie thrives on heartfelt melodies and a diy ethos, while denver and cornwall indie showcase regional identity through introspective tracks. singaporean indie shines with its fusion of traditional southeast asian sounds and global influences, creating music that feels both rooted and forward-looking. meanwhile, brighton, london, cardiff, and welsh indie each bring their distinct textures to the broader uk indie sound, offering reflective storytelling and moody atmospheres.
genres like jazz rap and alternative hip hop push boundaries by blending intricate rhythms, experimental beats, and socially conscious lyrics. scratch, the art of turntablism, continues to infuse dynamism into hip hop, complementing these evolving styles. equally compelling is irish hip hop, where traditional storytelling meets modern beats, creating fresh and deeply personal narratives. on the other side of the globe, palestinian hip hop combines arabic rhythms and languages with powerful commentary on cultural and political issues, while arab alternative blurs the lines between rock, pop, and electronic music to create something profoundly expressive.
women’s music and ectofolk provide deeply introspective and ethereal listening experiences, elevating marginalized voices with haunting melodies and feminist perspectives. chill breakcore balances frenetic breakcore beats with a laid-back, ambient vibe, appealing to fans of electronic music seeking both energy and introspection. bubblegrunge, a playful yet angst-ridden genre, mixes catchy melodies with gritty distortion, channeling the spirit of the '90s grunge revival.
other regional scenes, like australian alternative pop and indonesian folk, emphasize storytelling through raw, earthy sounds. spanish noise pop blends lush melodies with feedback and distortion to create dreamy, atmospheric textures. finally, the global rise of genres like bandung indie and singaporean indie highlights the growing cultural exchange in music, bridging local traditions with contemporary sounds.
if you’re looking to find new music in 2025, these subgenres offer a diverse array of sounds that are both innovative and culturally resonant. whether you’re drawn to the raw energy of crank wave or the poetic depth of jazz rap, there’s something here to spark your curiosity and expand your playlist. happy listening!
