this week we’re taking a leaf out of the ol’ book and getting into some country. some good country too, like some real premium stuff if you know what i mean. what’s that? you don’t? well, me neither, but i do know i’ve been enjoying this song quite a bit, so that’s good enough for me. meet new seven and their song ophelia.

it came!!!! from tiktok!!!!

i’ve been on tiktok quite a bit lately, and i keep finding all this great music and i was thinking, i bet im like, the only person who finds good music on here. just kidding, obvs there’s so much on there, so i thought it might be fun for us to do a lil group special edition! if there are any great tiktok musicians or tracks that you’ve found, send ‘em in via the form at the button right here and we’ll pull them together and publish a list or playlist or something.

how much have you been enjoying a single song review in the last few weeks?

what i liked! :)

this song is really sweet! it’s got that personable vocal track that is so key to this genre, with ever so slight vocal warbles which only serve to add character. that’s not to say it needs any extra, the vocal in this is warm, deep as all hell and so tone rich you you squeezed it you’d get oil. i also just loved the guitars in this. the various tones from the strumming rhythmn guitar to the twangy riffs and the bassy special third thing are brilliant. together they do so much to keep the sections of the song rich and varied without straying into any particular zone and getting stuck there. this is a song that has all the potential to get stale, but just utterly refuses to. and all of that is just to set up the main event, which is the fab guitar solo in the bridge which makes sure to land with both feet.

what i didn’t like :(

this song doesn’t lean in to the established country tropes, and that’s fine, but sometimes i really like hearing those. ah well

for fans of

this isn’t a great comparison, but it’s the only thing that i can think of while listening to this artist is the national, which feels not great. but i do love the national, and i do be thinking of them while listening to this artist, so now what.

should you listen to more?

im gonna be honest, i meant to finish writing this review like 20 minutes ago but i’ve spent the entire time i should’ve been writing just listening to this artist. the album this comes from; the colossus of uptown, is brilliant. that night is a great track, as is dying in the al gore suite, and also. can we just. the colossus of uptown, that’s such a cool album name goddammit. love that.

more we’ve been listening to

featured tennyson in this section before, featuring them today, will feature them again in the future. big big fan yes indeedy

i’ve known i would love this album for ages, and just never checked it out, and as it turns out, i was right!
