first off, i’d like to fully apologise for the rogue link in yesterdays playlist email lmao. i can’t believe that was the top clicked link, and of all the things for people to see, to see. that. very sorry, will almost defo happen again i get very silly when i’m very sleepy and last night i was zonked. will say tho, tno mentioned? does that mean anything to anyone? sound off in the replies if it does so i can add you to the list. also just before we begin, got a quick question for you all, i’ve been trying to get this newsletter to the point where it makes about as much as it costs so it’s not a drain on my finances, and several of you have been incredibly kind, and cool and smart and interesting and subscribed to the premium tier (premium review out tomorrow btw, upgrade here), but i was thinking about doing a merch drop? just a few bits that are environmentally friendly, union made, up for sale, what do you think?

would you be interested in a single song review merch?

i'm thinking of arranging a merch drop, and am wondering if anybody would be interested in getting their hands on some?

anyway, now that’s out the way, let’s get to the review and we have a subscriber submitted, super new artist that i think is going to make some waves. meet pail blaid, subscriber, indie pop singer, and all round really sick musician. they’ve got a moody rocky indie poppy song called the afterthought, and i tihnk it’s really sick.

i really love the use of environmental sounds in this. the combination of that, the backing vocals and the little bits of detail in the background really do a lot for making this song a fantastic world in which this song inhabits. it doesn’t so much start as exists within the world you’re in in the same way the sounds of the world around you don’t start or end, and achieving that is a really important thing for making your song feel real. the vocals in this too do a lot for bringing lots of feeling to this. the amount of personality coming through in this singers performance is really great, and achieving that level of personality, on top of having tons of details and world building sets this song ahead of the pack by quite some way. honestly i was really quite shocked to encounter an artist this early in their career producing music that’s at this level of quality because usually artists have quite the ugly duckling phase that has to be pushed through, it really takes some time and effort to establish your sound and personality, but not for this singer. they’ve got themselves figured out in a big way and that shines through right throughout this song.

i have to admit, i really wasn’t a fan of the lead guitar in this song. i thought of all of the elements that was bringing the least to the table and i think it could’ve been handled in a much better way. to me, the sound of this track is all about mood and texture, and this wasn’t bringing it.

omg have you ever seen sinister? that movie was a lot of fun but the bit where they’re looking at the pictures and they’re all scribbled out? was all i could think of when i saw this album cover. that and tyhe scene with the projector and the bad guy is in the film and he’s coming for youuuuuuu. anyway, that had nothing to do with this song, but it was in my head, so, there y’are.

when i heard this the first few times, i thought omg, that sounds like, a really chill version of sleeping with sirens. and then, i thought about it some more, and thought you know what, i’m actually right? i think anyway, which is very important. but then, i found this album that they did which is all acoustic versions of their songs, and while i think this is like on the other side of the chill-o-meter (patent pending), i think it’s getting in on a lot of the similar story telling and environment building and personality laden singing this song excels at. on top of that, old sleeping with sirens is very good i know that’s probably a bit controversial but it’s true.

this is this artists best song, but the rest of their stuff holds a candle to it for sure. the newer tracks they’ve released are a few interesting riffs on the theme in this song, with some more poppy elements hanging out. i think there’s tons of potential here and i’m quite excited to see where it goes.

or better yet, reply to this email! what did you think of this song? have you been listening to anything good lately? any gems i’ve missed?

more i’ve been listening to

donna missal / god complex the absolute state of the riffs in this. ohh man, it comes in with that first chorus and boom, we’re off to the races. it’s such a lush song dripping with personality and energy and i think it’s so sick.

portraits of tracy / found! found this one to be really cool! ahaaaaaa but for real, this song rules, it’s driving and driving and builds and builds and when that snare comes in on the first first chorus? yessir, it’s sick.

girl in red, sabrina carpenter / you need me now? right, i’m not saying i’m stereotyping lesbians, nor am i saying lesbians all think alike, but i am saying all the songs my lesbian friends love are absolutely freaking sweet, and this is no exception. it’s cool as hell, banging with energy and has sabrina carpenter hanging out in it, and it’s a whole thing in it too not like a subtle little drop in moment.
