hey everyone! lil reminder about the discord server, we’ve got a few people in now and it’s a lot of fun! lots of music being shared, a few playlists in there, let’s keep these good vibes goooooin

okay first things first, i tried with that press shot okay. genuinely spent 10 minutes trying to make it work, but sorry, some of you got chopped, nothing i could do about it. anyway, this track is a little bit older than what we’ve been featuring lately, but it was sent in by a subscriber and honestly it’s kinda a bop, so let’s roll with it. idk about you but winter really makes me a not so happy bunny, and this high energy indie tune was what i needed to not feel so down in the doldrums and i hope it is for you too :)

the main bit of this song, is a pretty good bit it must be said. it’s a lot of fun hearing a band land a lil twist on a really well known word, like when you hear someone with an interesting accent tackle a word in a different way. the way they worked it into the track? that’s really impressive. laying it up at the beginning to get it in your head does the main job of establishing it, but playing with it later in the song? well that’s where the fun begins. the repeated moments of that hook interfacing with the main vocal, and the structure of the song are a really neat way to build out the song without it becoming stale. for example in that last chorus they smoothly maintain that last note and transform it into a backing vocal, which not only swoops onto that last chorus just to give it a bit extra breadth. sometimes songs have bits, and sometimes those bits are good! anyway, how abotu the rest of the song? well, it’s a pretty strong instance of standard indie fair, which to be fair isn’t always super easy to execute, but this does it well. the production is top notch, the mix is gorgeous, everytihng feels bright and large and powerful, and this is a song that knew they were onto something when they came up with that bit.

i have a thing about brass instruments okay. i really think that in the context of a rock or an indie song, you need to use brass sparingly and with a sense of gravitas because you’re not only bringing sometihng that is, easily, astonishingly acousticly most powerful than your entire band drums included, but also something that tonally is in a very different world to what’s going on. if you don’t treat that with a touch of respect and intentionality, then you’re going to find yourself in a position like this song, where your most powerful and enchanting and toneful instrument sounds cheap and electronic. it’s not a great place to be frankly.

do you know what i mean when i say experian-ad-core

a song that kinda does the same bit-based-indie as this, but grankly to a much higher standard is the song comingback by parcels which is honestly such a great song that isn’t shy to have a few dramatic moments

this is a good band! there’s a lot of bits, like, a lot of bits, most of their big songs are based around bits if i’m honest, but they also make some pretty banging indie music and sometimes that’s what you need. i reckon being really into this band and knowing all of the backing vocal bits at a gig would be a lot of fun actually.

new music from filly / discotheque

this has all of the high energy of like 90s techno but with just enough modern flavourings to make it feel fresh. it’s also an absolute bop.

new instrumental jazz music from si chomphu with their song salin
