hello and happy presidents day! i know it’s presidents day despite being irish because i have a date later and have been asked as part of that to prepare a presentation on my fdavourite president. bizarre i know but we ball. for mine i’ve picked president lyndon b. johnson who, despite being a war criminal, was absolutely hilarious. for example, as part of his customary gift to the pop, president lyndon b. johnson gave the pop a marble bust of his favourite president, president lyndon b johnson. anyway, that’s the fun little anecdote to kick things off but i’m gonna b. honest i don’t have a great segway from that to this weeks song, so let’s just make the jump, ready? 1, 2, 3. ruby duff is a singer songwriter / pop act who has come out of nowhere with an absolute banger for this week. and by come outof nowhere i mean released it a few months ago but i hadn’t heard it then now had i. anywho,

there’s a really gentle blend of diffferent ideas in this track that come together to land something altogether cohesive that’s really impressive. the combination of the jazzy tones in the verse and the folky kick and hat pop blend a few references together which do a great job of laying up the solidly poppy chorus. the hook of that chorus is itself really well done which is so key for a pop act. echoing that out through the different motifs like the dissacoiated and reverbed piano does a great job of tying things together. the backing vocals really take the song up a notch in the second verse and onwards, giving extra oomph to key moments throughout, giving the song a strong sense of elevation as it builds up to the chorus where the wash of extraneous instruments, including a nice bit of sax, take some time to breathe and give the really interesting colours in this some time to shine.

i felt like this song was really building towards sometihng that did not deliver. the final chorus is one that hasn’t got the level of step up that the second verse has from the first, which leaves it all feeling a bit flat. it’s frustrating too because the build up in the bridge really gives the gesture of something big coming, and the drums even slightly reflect such a step up earlier in the song, without delivering.

i’ve complained pretty endlessly about how hard it is to do pop well and honestly, it really is. but this song? it actually introduces some really neat and fun things to the mix and i think it does it well and i wish we had more of that man. gimmie some more weird pop.

i’m feeling a lot of affinty for ricewine in this. again, someone doing pop music, doing it slightly differently, letting a lil blues and other influences drip through from the outside and keeeping things easy breezy with some really gentle vocals. it’s really cool, and so is this song, and that’s the point of the section.

i’ve actually been listening to a lot of this artists material and it’s all honestly pretty good! i usually say things like ohh if you like this song you’ll lik this artist or similar but with this artist i tihnk there’s a real spark of something here and if they keep trucking we’re going to be hearing a lot more from them. the sense of creativity and ability to branch out is really sick, and the killer vocals sell it.
