lads it is, as they say, absolutely baltic. meaning, cold where i come from. northern ireland of course, not the baltics. i think there they say it is absolutely here. to get us through the miserableness of how even the heating doesn’t work, i thought it would be a good time to share some weird electronicy stuff and vibe our way out of it. and then some landed into the submit a song database for us all. how about that. so without further ado because we’ve adone enough, meet this weeks track submitted by a subscriber; selkie, with their track heartspeak.

what i like

this song is in no rush to get to where it wants to go and it is absolutely in control as it does so. every phrase and refrain, every section and verse is relaxed and gentle, doing it’s utmost to let you feel every note. this means when sections like the contrasting textures at around 3.30 hit, you’re already seated and ready for it all to hit. also, it’s so genius to have two contrasting melodies playing at the same time, seperated by only texture, tone and spacing. that’s absolutely genius and it makes an atmosphere that’s so interesting to listen to. it forces you almost to just take a dive on one of the melodies, before coming back for another spin to check out what you missed. love a song with bonus content. the performance here from the vocalist is also, just top tier. able to pack so much tone and energy and personality into a singing performance that at times is held on by a fingernail in terms of energy. it has the effect of pulling you right the way in, leaving you aching on every word.

what i don’t like

the only thing i felt like this missed was just something to latch on to in a way that would give a listener a bit of a reference point. a hook oor a recurring motif of some kind that’s somewhat front and centre. something like that to let all the goodness and weirdness hang out in and around would’ve been neat.

my drunk opinion

this song sounds like what i imagine it feels like to be an extension cord plugged in to yourself for some infinite energy

my drunk opinion

oooohhhhh this song got me back on seafarers!!! i forgot how good seafarers are omg, similarly amazing emotional and vibey music.

idk abotu you all gang, but i am as of right this moment, a selkie fan. there’s a lot of great stuff going on, lots of really cool song writing and instrumentation and everything. it’s a vibe, it’s a shout, and i’m here for it all. check out the rest of their releases i dare you.
