honey, i made a survey!
and it’d mean the world to me if you could fill it out, i’m trying to figure out what kinds of music people are into and to direct more meaningful music reccs, so please…
i’ve got an absolute stormer of a song here for you. i actually think i wanted to feature it agesssss ago but for one reason or another i didn’t. i took a look through old issues and i couldn’t find if i’d featured it before, so if i have featured it before then i’m not sorry, it absolutely rules and you’re getting it again. enjoy girlkind by sinead o’brien, a 6 minute tour de force that makes me want to beat my chest and stomp my feet and it will for you too.
there are several elements that make this song g r e a t. let’s start with the immediate; the unrelenting driving, pounding energy that pushes this song ahead like a boulder rolling down a hill but upwards. the groovy, plodding drums, the chaotic extraneous percussion, the chugging bass line all make something that starts and does. not. stop. it rules. then, of course, is the vocal work. the vocal work absolutely rocks. the spoken word, accent heavy, personality driven and utterly relentless vocal work just rules. this is a vocalist that you could hear and immediately know who it is, and that’s a rare thing on it’s own, but for it to be sick as hell as well is quite something. the endless building, burning intensity of this song though leads to the massive moment that makes the whole song work. cast your ears over 2:05 when the riff kicks in, you’ll know the one. oh my god it is killer. it’s so hard to nail a riff like that. it’s like it needs to emotionally encapsulate the feeling of going over a waterfall or rearing a horse atop a ridge. it’s so powerful and massive and cool and man i wish i could just feel like that riff makes me feel all the time.
whispering: more riff more riff talking: more riff more riff: shouting: more riff more riff yelling and slamming table: more riff!!! more riff!!!
okay so look, i’ve got a big drum, and some big boots, and i’m going to walk up and down that hill, are you coming yes or no. i need an answer now, not later, now so wha’ts it gonna be, buttercup?
i have a bit of a rogue comparison here, but i’ve been thinking about it for a bit and i honestly think it works. the comparison is dark horse by converge, a song that has three things; an absolutely killer riff, a pounding rhythmn section, and a vocal take that is absolutely balls to the wall nuts. and you know what? that song has all three, but more crucially? it hits that same emotional note with a hammer so big it looks comedic like it was from a comic book
i’ve been listening to this album non stop since the other day and it all rules. this is an artist with an extremely well defined sound and if you love that sound the way i do you’re in for a very good time. if you aren’t then tough ig sorry.
