i’m gonna be honest with you gang, i had a song for this week and… well, i lost it. genuinely i’m not kidding, stumbled on this little gem last night and was like oh man, can’t want to write this one up what a banger. did i write down what it was? no, did i pay attention to what it was? double no, did i spend like, 45 minutes searching for it? you bet i did. so, i offer you a consolation prize, a different banger i was going to share a different week, but am instead sharing now! this ones a few years old now, but i really like it it’s super sweet and fun, has lots of catchy riffs and is one of those songs you just find yourself whistling and whistling. i think that’s a fair compromise while i resume my search for this damned song that i was so gassed about. so, in the meantime, meet sobs from singapore with their awesome track air guitar.

what i liked! :)

i want to talk about impact for a second, because the thing about music is not only does it convey emotional feeling from the perspective of the writer, but very often it causes a pretty massive emotional impact in the listener. this is why we feel awe when someone does something virtuosic like a guitar solo or anticipation at a build, and a big part of why we feel so strongly about music. the impact of music is really something, and this song lands with a very particular impact which is quite unlike most other things i’ve heard recently. you see, those examples i mentioned, those are kinds of crude implements of impact, the big flashy moments that clearly telegraph their intent to you like a 4 on the floor build in a club beat. this song however, between the coy guitar riffs and half spoken half sung verse vocals creates the incredible feeling of a song that is staring you in the eye like the mona lisa. it feels really personable in the kind of way of having a bubbly and bright conversation with a friend does. it’s ability to create that impact is so cool and it’s one of the great things that drew me to this song. what kept me around after, was the deft execution of a massive chorus with a singable line that makes me want to actually jump. it really is a sweet december cherry pie round here, i don’t even know if those are the lyrics but dammit, i’m singin em. when the half bridge half chorus just before the solo around 2:20 hits with the dropped down guitar and dissaociated vocal, it just works.

what i didn’t like :(

alright now that you’ve just read me gush for like 500 words here’s why this song absolutely sucks you ready? it doesn’t it slaps, i love it and i ain’t got nothin sometimes these reviews are hot biased and that’s fine, music rules, this song rules and if you agree you rule too.

oooohhhhhh okay it’s like the sweetness of my cherry pie my bad, i am dumb and can’t hear lyrics properly. they do not even come close to saying december at all i don’t know where i got that from.

at my work i used to run the social media all the time and we’d get this guy who would tweet all day at us telling us to listen to weezer and sending us pictures of himself photoshopped onto weezer and videos of him playing weezer riffs. anyway, this song reminds me of weezer and weezer reminds me of that kid. the circle of life innit.

should you listen to more?

yeah sobs absolutely rule they’re soooo good. they’ve a few songs that have absolutely blown up, but this album wasn’t anywhere near as well known i dont’ think? i reckon they’re going to absolutely pop off on their next release which is probably quite soon.
