another huge stormer from the database thank you everyone, please, keep them coming because the quality of songs getting submitted these days is just. huge. and this is one of them. this is a great track, a bit old school, really hitting that pop punk early 2000s itch and man i’m all about it. meet teenage joans and their track sweet and slow, our track this week.

there’s a moment right at the start of this song in the pre-chorus where the vocalist kind of tumbles over their vocals slightly, and instead of it being some kind of flub, it’s instead a really inspired little moment of singing. going from a mistimed syllable to an intentional little riff genuinely made me sit bolt upright in my seat because of how smooth and cool it was. see, this song isn’t anything particularly groundbreaking, which isn’t a criticism, there’s so much good music out there that makes really impressive work out of an established formula, this is one of them! but it also does a great job of leaning into that form in some really neat ways. for example, tonally and aesthetically this is a really stylistic track in a way that many of the songs we review here don’t quite land. this is all in the details, from the backing vocals to the overblown toms, it’s all an attempt to take the form of basic as pop punk and push it just a bit. the end result is a track that hits hard and feels great to listen to, and more importantly, sing along to loudly and obnoxiously

i think the only criticism i have for this track really is that it does such a job working with the formula’s it’s used to, it could’ve really made do with a slight taste breaker somewhere in it. nothing crazy or substantial, just a moment to almost look to the camera and wink in some way, before going right back into that pastiche.

okay, please, bear with me a bit here. because the only thing that i could think about when listening to this track, was the busted song for the thunderbirds film which goes so unbelievably hard it’s shortcircuited my brain a little bit. what an all time track. so so so so good.

i’ve actually gone and lsitened to a fair amount of this band and let me tell you, they’re pretty darn good. there’s a lot going on where you can tell they’re still finding their feet musically, but this song is a moment where they really found that strength. i also wrote this review and then discoverd they dropped a track like a week ago, but this is what was submitted so here we are. it’s also really really good, so enjoy!
