😄 vanessa /// hands review
wanna see these hands?
i’ve got a really neat song here for you this week. we’re combining a ton of cool influences in this, the song i’ve picked for this week! also, i don’t know what it is, but noticing april of this year was a banging month for music releases for some reason? like, a lot of songs dropped in april, for some reason. anyway, we’ve got another one, and it slaps, meet vanessa and their track hands.
at the very top, the break beats in this song are genius. it’s such a clever and easy way to just lay up not only a level of energy and intensity, but also some rich texture and ferocity with such a simple element. there’s no need either for any kind of extravagent fills and fiddly bits, just good old fashioned going hard break beats. the contrast therefore of the broad and deep synth and vocals on the go for the rest of the track is another lil stroke of someone who is absolutely cooking. the slow plodding bassline with it’s vast warm tones make themselves scarce for a lot of the song, but when they’re there you feelllllll them. but let it not be said that intensity can’t be brought to you without speed. the vocal runs this vocalist does with ease are as attention grabbing and brazen as anything you might here on something worthy of moshing.
i think this song had a lot of cool stuff going on, but it lacked a real moment of it all landing together into a kind of apex moment. i talk about this a lot on this newsletter, that a great thing to look out for in songwriting si some kind of moment where you kind of chekovs gun the ideas you lay up at the start. sometimes, in songs you find music that operates quasi independnatly, which is fine, but if you could have a moment where you cross the streams you’d be really onto a winner.
you ever see dudes do that dance thing where they like hop and stomp a foot down? i want to do that to this song
honestly this part of the review is sometimes the hardest, owing to the fact the artists i’m thinking of have names, and idk what they are, so i wind up hunting for them for hours and then i’m like wait what artists am i meaning again? anyway, this is my way of saying i’ve been listening to let’s eat grandma for the last 45 minutes and i think there’s a ton of similarities but let’s eat grandma don’t really use breakbeats and you know what? that’s on them! they should!
afraid this artist only has the one song, so idk! but i think they’ve got some good things going, and could be in the running to make something really special if they keep working on all these fun ideas. the heaps of contrast and tone on display are a lot of fun and i think
what did you think of this song? |
more we’ve been listening to
i’ve really been in a oh no it’s winter i need fuzzy music to vibe to on the bus lately, and can you believe it? i found some!
i missed georgia playing this at the science museum because i was at something else and got an email and you know what? nearly gave up on london in that moment. what’s the point?!
there is something terrifically indulgent about an artist who contrasts noodly and chunky riffs with big fuck off bass fills in their hook and you know what? i’m here for it. it’s like eating a big bar of galaxy chocolate in one sitting and skipping dinner.
what did you think of this issue of a single song review?do you want more like this? less like this? something else than this? let us know! |
