alright everyone, settle down and strap in because. we have an oddity here. so, i found this song like a few weeks ago and won’t lie, got real excited to share it with you. don’t know if you know that, but i get properly hyped when i find a cool song and get to share it, it’s genuinely one of my favourite things. especially when i find it well ahead of time and can think about it, sometimes i find them or pick them like the day or two before the review goes out but this one’s been on the brew for a lil while and i’ve been very excited cus i think it’s ace. but then. but then. i went and got started on this review, started doing all the bits that i do, went and tracked down the music video, listened to it a few times to get it in my head, did my lil pre-review that i do where i just like jot down some thoughts i have as i listen. and then i’ve heard it a few times on streaming, and think hey this video looks interesting, let’s check it out. (side note: love a good music video, especially like low budget indie ones where ppl get all creative and weird) and that’s when i discover to my horror!!!! there are multiple versions of this song. the version i’ve been listening to? is a sped up version!!!! what!? and not to get all breakcore-was-the-best-thing-ever, however, in my humble opinion? the faster version is way better. the slow version? kinda not doing it for me. it’s still great it’s literally the same song, but those extra few bpm? they carry a lot of weight i won’t lie. so, i’ve linked both up above, the faster version we’ll be reviewing because it’s my newsletter i make the rules, but the slow version is linked behind the ‘yes :)’ for the music video, check it out too and tell me what you think either by replying to this newsletter or leaving a comment. in the meantime, meet wilderness and their song(s [i suppose]) w.i.f.i.

now that i’ve done that all, i kind of feel a bit self conscious with what i was going to say because, i actually have something i really like about this song that just doesn’t work on the slow version, and that’s the head-bop-ometer is off the scale. like, the warbling synths and simple grooves are so so good at imbuing an unstoppable sense of oh sorry hang on, i need to vibe out here for a bit. it’s a thing that can only be achieved by a musical combination of elements that give you that even steady pulse, mixed with the emotional energy of someone standing on a table in a restaurant. it then sets the scene even further for some absolutely riotous musical moments, like the ever so slightly off synth line or the massive vocal choruses. i want to give a real shout out to the chorus in this song, it’s genuinely so cool. the splashed piano chords on the half spoken vocal that shifts in stages from something really straight back into that funky beat is so cool and well done, and does a great job of letting you know that oh, this isn’t over just yet. i also loveeeeeeee the warble on the vocal track, which i think is an artefact of being sped up, but it’s so good. it gives just a slight element of texture that isn’t necessary, but adds so much richness. when it’s backed up by the spoken chorus in the background it really steps up a notch into something, as jedward might say, jepic.

right again, i’m back on this two verisons thing because retroactively now that i’ve listened to both, i can’t help but feel the inescapable details of this being sped up. it’s like, i don’t think this was re-recorded at this faster pace, i think it was maybe just sped up a few beats and called a day, and that produces some effects that sound sick, and some that don’t quite work. i’d like them to re-record it if they didn’t already, but also it’s not my band and i can’t tell them to do shit so, go figure.

how are there two? sorry, i’m really sutuck on this, never had a review with a theme before, really vibing it out here by the seat of my pants but two? why stop there? why not three? or four? where’s the vapourwave breakbeat mumblerap fancam montage version, or sometihng. idk, kinda scrambling a bit for that one won’t lie. songs cool tho so i think that’s what counts.

okay okay, i’m gonna stop messing around with the two versions thing, but, i do have a comparison here that hits a lot of the same notes (ahem) and, additionally, if it was sped up by a few points, it’d sound even better (i think), and that song is best for you by blood cultures.

i tihnk this song is this bands best song, or at least it’s my favourite. that said, they’ve a ton of cool things going on, and when they get some cool bleepity bloops going on? it really works. if anything, the more this band slips from mainstream indie the better they get, long may that continue.

chappell roan / super grpahic ultra modern girl i’m obsessed with this artist. she’s so funny and cool and her songs are so ridiculous and over the top while also being just absolute bops, i hope she has big things ahead of her because i’m obsessed.
