hello everyone, i’m not going to lie to you, had a bit of a stinker this eve, kinda was lying in bed thinking of binning this review for this week, but i didn’t! and i’m really glad i didn’t, because i put the call out last week to say right, getting a bit stale here let’s shake things up. and you all answered, so by a stunning vote of 75% for, you all voted that this week you wanted jazz. so i did a bit of digging, did some more hunting, took myself off the edge of the map and back again and let me just say. i think we done it. got a realllll banger, and you know how i know? i was taking myself off the train earlier, walking home and it was a gorgeous night and this jazzy little number made me feel like i was walking through super 8 film. i think if a song makes you feel like the main character that makes it special. this is anchi bale game by admas sons of ethiopia (i think they might just be called admas, or songs of ethiopia, or both, there’s a few different versions out there i saw while researching so i kinda went with both if that’s wrong lmk and i’ll fix it!)
i! want! to! talk! about! texture! texture is so important in all things, music doubly so! the dividing line between a couple chords and a banger, despite what copyright lawyers might try tell you, is texture! the feelllll of your music, created through your choice of instruments tones and how you mix those together makes your music feel like something different even though on paper it’s identical to something else. little things like using several people snapping your fingers to lay out a lil 4 on the floor beat that you can groove off. it’s so clever, why? because they’re not perfectly in sync, the ever so slight variations in the rhythmn in the different finger snaps make the snare sound they occupy stretch out over the beat, making it a rounder, less sharp sound. this makes the window of opportunity for the bass to groove much wider, giving it all a much more relaxed feel.
this isn’t whiplash, that movie’s bad not because it’s incompetantly made, but because it teaches the wrong lesson. music isn’t about perfection, it’s about people and people making music together for the joy and experience of it. the imperfections and textures and feel of what it’s like when a specific group of people get in a room are what makes it real. you could not recreate this band, you can only make new bands. that’s why texture is important, and important to lean into like this song does in spadessssssss. i don’t have a huge amount else to say about this song other than the joy of listening to the instrumentation as those solo’s get going is just top tier. they’re really giving it stacks but not in a shred ohh look at me kind of way, it’s just so fun and full of joy. like when the main synth line comes in, and the bass plays a lil fill to compete with the rising melody only for it all to drop off aww man. the harmonised synth and guitar riffs give the idea of two people just locked in with each other.
i could’ve listened to this for like 45 minutes, and i kind of did i listened to it like 5 or 6 times, i gues my only real complaint is there is a ripper of a riff right at the end, and it’s only really in the song the once. more of that pleaseeeeee.
a thing i’ve always wanted, and never really had because we don’t really have them where i live because weather and land and etc, is a porch. like a veranda porch. there’s a movie my dad loves which i can’t remember what it’s called but there’s these two old dudes who sit out on their veranda with their guns, and these people come to try sell them things and they shoot at them to get them to go away, and this one guy drives up, jumps out of his car and holds up a white flag from behind a ridge. one guy turns to the other guy and says “he’s been here before”. basically, that’s what i want in life and right now, with this as the soundtrack.
the only song that is screaming in my brain is feels like summer by childish gambino which also really leans into texture, but is a slightly different kind of tune to this. still a banger.
look, i would never lie to you. and i’m not going to start now. it’s bangers all the way down. i, for one, am having the time of my life enjoying this band, and i think you will too. if you like a groovy lil time where some absolutely killer musicians are showing off what they can do then boom. you’re in, baby. enjoy!

or better yet, reply to this email! what did you think of this song? have you been listening to anything good lately? any gems i’ve missed?
more i’ve been listening to
brat and it’s consequences have been a great boon for the human race. this isn’t brat inspired, but it is brat coded, which is close enough.
bit of an odd one! and odd is good. what’s going on in it? no clue, but i am seated, and listening.
i don’t think i’m as cool as these indie boys, but maybe that’s okay. maybe i don’t need to be.
what did you think of this issue of a single song review?do you want more like this? less like this? something else than this? let us know! |
