yet another winner for the submit a song crew can i get a shout out all the lovely artists and musicians submitting their songs and thier songs being b a n g e r s! this week is no different. got a wavey, heavy, shoegaze-y track from the vault this morning. it’s got big riffs, it’s got big fuzz and it’s got a heart of gold. so buckle up buckaroo, and meet anemoia and thier song cowboy, this weeks track.
i really like how this song reaches some really great heights of heaviness and drama but doesn’t ever feel the need to reach for any of the traditional tropes of heavy music. there’s no chugging or deep heavy moments, it’s just intrinsically tonally super duper heavy which is very impressive. what’s more, the use of melody throughout all of the music of the track really make it feel unique and considered but without losing any of that vast heaviness. whats more, the way this song steps into and then out of, being face meltingly heavy, is really gentle and intentional. this is something the melody first approach of the track allows for with a really smooth feel to it lending the track a real sense of completeness to it that i love.
one thing i felt was lacking from this song was anything to really stand out and hold onto. there wasn’t any real sense of a hook on the vocals or the melody, and it left parts of the song washing over you without leaving anytihng behind. a lot of the tones at play here are super washed out with core melodies hanging out in the back making up the backbone of the song but without anything front and centre that can be kind of hard to hold on to.
let me tell you, the urge to buy cowboy boots is strong and getting stronger, and did this song help? no, not even a little bit.
this track got me digging through my old shoegaze and rock stuff and i found some tracks i really enjoyed, but none so much as this track settled by the band prawn. banger
these guys are really solid! this new track is a real step forward for them i tihnk, but if you like this washy shoegazey stuff you’ll find lots to love here. some of their bigger tracks have some really cool ideas tho and you can really feel the steps up and forward their newer stuff has so i think they’re cooking.
what did you think of this song? |
