i think this song sounds really neat and sometimes that’s all there is to it :)
this be what i’m listening to when i’m making contraptions and doohickeys down at the thingymajig store

genre: indie
release date: 16/08/24
runtime: 3:40
video: no :(
this review goes out to past me who was listening to this song and thinking hey this is a neat song, gee i bet there isn’t some like, list of thousands of people i could share this out to. bet nobody i know or have the ability to talk to on a regular basis via an email based delivery system such as a newsletter or similar, would be interested in hearing this absolute banger of a song that sounds great and better yet, is great. ah well! ah well i said! ah well indeed! ah well, here we go, sorry everyone, kept this one under my hat like a rube. but no longer. allow me to introduce you all to ok cowboy (which, brief aside, is a top tier band name if ever i heard one) and their song little splinters!
this song is super grungy and a of all i love it for that. the super heavy moments in this song kind of come out of nowhere, but hit so hard. those real chuggy riffs with the rhythmn section just wailing on the downbeat do such a great job of making the choruses in particular just feel powerful and big and nasty. beauitiful stuff. but b of all, at times tonally and sonically this song leans into that grunge aesthetic so hard it comes out the other side, like the moments where the vocal gets treated and totally frazzed out with distortion are so cool, it’s a blink and you’ll miss it moment but it does so much to ground this song and turn it into a whole aesthetic moment of clarity. that vocal too is so top tier. i really really love how you’re getting all angles of what this singer can do. at times, this performance is razor thin and gentle and vulnerable but at others it takes you for a walk and let’s you know who’s boss with some massive takes that just go and go.
i think my gripe with this song is that musically it plays things so much more safe than it needs to, and would’ve benefitted from pushing the boat out more. there’s no real moment of intruige or experimentation from the musicianship standpoint, and giving it something would give you a basis point to compare to. either go all downhill and let the song wallow a little before bringing those big punishing choruses back, or just go for broke and land a big ol solo in there. either way, without something the song starts to feel a lil stale which may be what grunge is meant to smell like but it isn’t what it’s meant to feel like.
i think i just like it when vocalists get a bit weird with vocal effects and it sounds good and it gets all fuzzy and
this song reminds me of dora jar, who are yet another band i can’t believe haven’t blown up yet, but they have blown up just a lil bit more than these guys so far and good for them, they absolutely rule btw.
so i mentioned earlier that i felt bad for keeping this one under my hat, and i do, but crucially i feel bad because so many of their other songs are so so good. this, i’m telling you, are a band who just absolutely are cooking.
