you ever heard of vibe coding? it’s this new thing where dudes (it’s usually dudes, or dudes for now) get an ai to code something and then go hey look i did this thing when actually it was the AI but they’re like oh no i was vibe coding you see, i vibed it into being y’know, vibed it. i don’t like those guys honestly, i think it’s the same as when someone fires something into one of those image generators and then is like i made this, it’s rubbish. the reason it’s rubbish is they’re not really doing anytihng, they’re just kinda there playing second fiddle. vibing, creating a vibe, making a space and a time where other people can and do feel things intentionally, this is something that humans do, it’s a human act and it’s something that this weeks act does exceedingly well. meet wings of desire, and their song runnin’!
i love how simplicity rules the roost in this song. there are several moments throughout that are done with such a level of precision that you totally forget that what’s happening here is so simple. take the main beat, where the triplet on the bass and a basic groove on the drums pound this one out, the ever so slight syncopation skipping that fouth beat produces a sense of energy as the song gets along at a gallop. it feels powerful and that makes it seem more intricate than it is. there’s another great example of this in the bridge as it comes out into the final chorus. a big old drum fill laid up by the bridge there to bring the final chorus swinging in thunders it’s way through into our consciousness, and it’s a stormer all made up of simple rolls. the choruses of the backing vocals do so much for this song too, taking something again super simple but doing it with such grace that it just lands with both feet. i really really liked this song most of all however, for the feelings it created and how it made me live in it’s world. musicians, artists, singers and songwriters, if you can make your music make people feel like this then let me tell you, you’ll be on to a winner.
no real complaints on this one to be quite h. it’s a really great track that does what it does super duper well. i tihnk the only thing missing from it is a cracker of a hook to land it in your brain, it’s a lot of fun listening to it and getting lost in it but none of the vocal of instrumental melodies manage to deliver anything like a whistlable or stuck in hook, so it becomes a bit forgettable after alls said and done.
been thinking a lot about what i want to do this summer, and i think the thing i want to do more than anything right now is to climb onto a roof on a scorching hot day in the early evening and watch the sun go down.
i thought about a few songs that do what this one does, and there are a few decent examples for sure, but one that stuck out quite strongly was this song what went down by foals, which i’ve referenced before a few times. it’s definitely a top tier example of a song delivering something super duper powerful in a super simple way.
this band are really going somewhere. the album this is from is so, so good and it’s full of bangers like this. they have a really excellent sound that they’re working and it’s evident massively in their latest single that they’re hard at work honing in on what makes that sound work and ramping it up.
