alright let’s get into it but just before we do, i wanna justify this weeks song a little. this song is by what spotify reliably assures me and everyone else is a quote reverbcore krautpop group. i love genres, i love when people get a bit weird with them, and i really love this band, but i love this remix even more. it’s got a bit more spring in it’s step, it’s got a lil bit more happenin, and while the original song is really cool. this remix takes it to another level, so shoutout to melenas, but also shout out to peanut butter wolf, if that is your real name. banger all round. now if you don’t mind, i’ve been sick as a dog in bed all weekend and i want to get into some cool music instead of sitting around all gross like, so let’s do this thing. meeta melenas, and their song bang.

what i like

what i like

there’s a little thing this singer does with this song that is something i always like to see. that is, when they sing a word or phrase over and over and over again identically, and then just shift it ever so slightly. just a little turn of phrase or vocal, a wee iteration on what you’re heard before, when done right can be exactly the kind of vocal riffing to take a song to a new level. it’s also a clever thing to do in a song like this because this track relies heavily on it’s hypnotic qualities. being the kind of song that locks you in psychically and emotionally takes the simplistic qualities and elevtates them. an important aspect to that is taking those themes and ideas and editing them because that’s what clues you in to the fact that you are in fact locked in. over and above on this song, it also just has a great sense of energy and fun.

i, for one, am pointing my fingers at the main culprit - the hat, shaker and tambourine on the drum kit and the way the rhythmn section and vocals in this are just bumping along on top of each other. the echoing of the vocal elements for example with the bass line really gives this song a sense of progression that escalates and escalates. by the time the song is 2 minutes in we’re already up and ready and bumping. ultimately, it’s these tiny details that really do a lot to make this song feel fun and interesting, and that’s exactly what i’ve been needing lately.

what i don't like

what i don’t like

i don’t want to rag on the original song too much, but i do think this remix is way better. that said, i think there are things both songs could learn from each other. for example, this remix misses out on the ripper of a synth solo that breaks out halfway through the song, steals the show for like a minute and then is nowhere to be found later on. it’s really rad, and i wish it made more of an appearance in this. that said, i really like how the remix kinda gets to the point and gets going. there’s little messing around, it knows what it’s got on it’s hand and gets into it. on the flip side, the original works with what it has and develops things out into fully fleshed out sections. all of these things said, i have no idea what this song is about. that’s not a criticism of the song, i just bet it’s something cool but will feel mighty silly if it’s something problematic and i’ve just spent however long gassing it up.

my drunk opinion

one time i was in a nightclub and they played rattlesnake by king gizz for some reason, and me and about two other people were like yeooooo and everyone else was like what the hell is this but all that said, i don’t want to compare this band to them, instead, i want to reach for the now grammy nominated absolute mad lads that are fontaines d.c. and their song starburster because this song and that had me similarly enraptured in their hypnotic tones and it’s a vibe, altho very much on the wario end of the spectrum.

should you listen to more

should you listen to more

yeah this band is coolllllllllllllll! i kinda went on one a lil bit about the remix vs the original, but they’re both great. also, lots of cool music coming from these cool cats. lots of weird synthy moments, lots of real hypnotic and vibey stuff it’s easy to get lost in, lots of just great stuff all round. love to see it, love to hear it, love to hear more of it, crack on!
