hello everyone, i think i scalded my little fingie, so if you see more spelling mistakes this issue than usualy, it’s because of injury, please send sympathy! or don’t, you don’t know where i live, i could be anywhere, i could be in your house! i’m not, i’m in my house, writing a review. what am i reviewing? well, i’m getting back to the roots of what we often review here on this single song review, with a banging indie pop song that’s making me want to be wandering through a busy street on the way to somewhere busy and fun and full of people. i’m going to do that on wednesday, so i’ll pop this on and let you know, but i already have a hunch it’s gonna be perfect for it, and perfect for you too. meet chloe parché! indie pop singer, giving it stacks with this song, upside down.
i want to talk about mixing for a second, because the thing about mixing is, when it comes to piecing a song together, mixing is the. like it’s a lot more than this, but it’s the salt and pepper of cooking. as in, it’s both a pretty critical set of ingredients that work to really bring lots of disparate flavours together into somethign cohesive and vibrant, but also, it’s a bit of artisty and knowledge. the line between too much and not enough is fine and almost arbitrary, but you candefinitely tell the difference between someone who knows what where and when to apply the right amount of salt and pepper. in this, we see a parallel with this song because the mix on this is delicious.
see that? bringing the metaphor together with a bit of grace? well get used to it buddy boy because that’s exactly what you’re getting in this song. right from the off, with that ever so gentle little bit of spoken audio from the studio lands in you are treated to a delight of bringing things together. take the almost brassy largess of the drums, that don’t just hit deep and low, but have that semblence of high end detail that helps it anchor itself right into the pocket with the ever so slightly distorted bass. it brings a real sense of groove and energy to this song that it knows how to play with. knowing not only how to land into something interesting and high energy, but also when to step away in service of the song like in the pre-chorus is so easily done you’d think anyone could do it. they can’t, most people don’t, but this does.
that’s actually something that this song does right throughout that i really enjoy. for example, this song makes a great use of what my old piano teacher used to call a disney fake out, where tons of disney songs do this super cheesy like dip off right at the end of the chorus where the energy falls right out of the bottom of a song, and then it works it’s way back into the chorus. this song does a great job of that, simply by affecting the vocal with a bit of audio effects, it’s really slick, and it helps lay up the bridge when those same effects reintroduce themselves like the baddies in veggietales.
i think a thing that this song doesn’t really manage is matching it’s own energy right throughout. there’s one area where this song is actually quite weak, and that’s the hook. i like it, but while it did work it’s way into my head, it didn’t do so in the kind of way where i’d have to be listening to it a dozen or more times to get rid of it. hooks are hard, and i think this one was just ever so slightly off, and i think where it went wrong was in the energy. rather than a chesty hum and something that was brighter and in a higher register, you’d be laughing.
what does she say at the start? every time i hear it i’m like ahh yes got it, and then i don’t got it, reader, i don’t got it at all.
now unfortunately there is a singer this reminds me of a lot, and they didn’t back the eurovision boycott and got nil poits, yes that one, so instead i’m going to compare this song to another banger, golden dawn arkestra / phenomenal which has more of that gorgeous mixing, high energy pop drama and is doing some fun stuff.
this artist is cooking i’ll tell you that for free. they had a bit of a break after 2021 it seems and then came back with banger after banger after banger and it’s all been on the up and up from there. this isn’t actually their latest song, but i found it and i think it’s sick, but their latest song is a bop too.
