so before we get into this weeks review, i wanna share a lil more about that event i hinted at. i’m gonna give you all a look at the vision, so you can see what i’m aiming for and if you’re still interested, keep your eyes peeled on your inbox. i’ve deleted the word ‘lil’ from this paragraph 4 times and i’m restricting myself to just one earlier, why? cus you’re not little, you’re big! normal size, even, i’ve always thoguht so. you, when faced with, say, an ant, would not be crushed under it’s mighty foot. do ants have feet? no idea. what i do think is this event is going to be something like the following;

- central london (somewhere)
- super chill & low stakes
- pay what you want / can for entry
- geared towards sharing tracks you love
- emphasis also on meeting new people to become friends with / jam with / who knows

so if that sounds like something you’d be interested in coming to then pls vote (again) as i’m trying to guage how many people to prep for coming so i can book a venue eeeeeee let’s gooooo

if i hosted an event in london, would you be interested in attending?

i'm thinking of ways to bring a single song review to the real world, and i had an ideal for a really cool event. if it was in london and you had plenty of advanced notice, would you be interested in coming?

aight, that out the way we’ve got a song to listen to and this song is so cool. one of those ones where as soon as i heard it i was like right, that’s the song for the week. it’s got some cracking performances, some really cool production and does a lot of neato beatos. meet daniel noah miller, and his song typical.

there’s a moment towards the start of this song where the first chorus drops in after being built up to from the verse, where a lot of the ideas set up by the verse are dropped away entirely. in their place, a gorgeous guitar moment with some strummed chords on a lovely sounding melody hooking it’s way into your brain and staying there. it’s a gorgeous little moment of contrast that does so much to not only set up the song but also frame what’s going on. that frentic drum energy and groove are present for most of the rest of the song, but the first time you hear it you’re just getting to grips with it, and once it comes back, you’ve heard it’s absence and that makes it feel a lot more important and fiesty. as a result, you find yourself feeling it more than you would have originally. what’s more, when that chorus returns with that sick hook, it’s got more of that drum energy behind it, but this time, you’re really aware of how those elements work together. by setting those things beside each other and then layering them on top of each other you wind up with a much better moment. sometimes setting something up delivers more than the sum of it’s parts.

there’s a moment in this around the 2:20 mark where a hi hat moment pops in and it really ramps this song up a notch. it’s a piece of excitement landing on top of something tight and getting ready to pop, and almost immediately after this song drops itself down into a breakdown for a half time moment. it feels like the timing is off there emotionally speaking. it doesn’t have the payoff that this song is reaching for and i feel like an extra chunk of escalation would’ve really taken this up a notch before that drop out, making both the build up and pay off really work way better. unfortunately, it jumps too soon and

honestly this doesn’t usually happen usually it’s like way later i don’t know what happened there aha maybe give it a few minutes

i thought i was thinking of one thing, but then i shopped around and realised, this song reminds me massively of one of my favourite tracks actually. that’s the difference by toro y moi and flume, an absolute banger! you’ve got your tight drums, you’ve got your lovely melodies, you’ve got your singable energy off the back of it all coming together. yeah, this is the one.

dude this artist is so good. it’s hoenstly banger after banger on here, and you know what else? a gorgeous aesthetic going on. i love a little theme! i love when things all work together! i love when you look back on all of the little bits and while each of those little bits has their own strengths and merits, zoomed out and taken as a whole you are able to enjoy and observe something even more! it’s cool! and this artist is doing all that and more. hell yeah
