going to be a little honest this week, and share a song i absolutely, rooting for tootenly adore like you wouldnโt believe. itโs been around a bit, i think, and iโve been a fan for most of that time. and it hits, it hits so gosh darn hard. so when it comes on you best believe iโll be strutting, marching, singing along. and you will too. meet devon again, and their track cherry cola.
going to talk for a second about one of my favourite concepts in music; tension. now, tension is a term that is both overplayed and misunderstood. in essence, itโs tee up and pay off. youโve heard of chekovs gun? tension. a build and then drop? tension. anytime you hear some song at something up and then put down what you expect or want resolved, thatโs tension. this song is tension done so so so right. and itโs woven all the way through the track too.
take the chorus for example, the syllabence and delicate lyrical structure serves to dial in your attention because it builds expectation of something. and each time it rolls around, the song gives just a bit more. whether thatโs the drums and guitar opening up a bit more or the story of the lyrics developing, it all moves forward and faster, forever twirling, twirling towards a conclusion. and then, in that final chorus, paydirt. the whole song opens up and books it for the exit with a huge outro, only to be cut short by the songs deliberately short run time. absolutely beautiful.
my only real critique of this track is that in that final chorus, the crash cymbals come off a tad muted. i want them to absolutely wail on the final beats. and they do, just a touch more gently than iโd like.
i want so bad to be screaming this at karaoke. i need more people to know it so i can do it at karaoke and other people know it. i need that to happen so you all have to listen to that i can play this. at karaoke. please.
itโs giving dora jar a bit. the artist everyone got mad at for supporting gracie abramโs. she certainly is one of the onyl artists i know of who has both the lyric writing chops and themusical creatively to be in the same vein and on the same level as this track. which is saying something!
absolutely, man we have a bright spark right here who is absolutely going somewhere. they are, must be said, a bit bigger than the artists we typically cover here, but theyโre still well before up and coming. and besides, itโs such a banger.
or better yet, reply to this email! what did you think of this song?
