new music from donor lens ft eulalie with their song mirror mirage

i don’t know how much disclosure i need to do here, but this weeks artist is both an artist i know and love, and i saw them at a gig recently. if you’re like me you might sometimes imagine kinda idealised visions of things, and then not realise you have a big concept for something, until you see it and you go ‘oh!’. well, the gig i saw this band at was that for me, with a basement show. imagine a basement show right, i’ve actually been to a few but this was the most like, oh! this is a basement show basement show i’ve ever been to. let me set the scene; it’s dark, it kinda stinks a lil, you’ve had some pints, and the band are playing, and their singer(s) are absolutely ripping it in the crowd who are all lovely and they’re bopping like crazy. oh! and there’s what looks to be a pensioner in a bucket hat hardcore dancing for the whole thing, he’s a king, no idea what his name is but god bless. anyway, that’s donor lens, they rule and here’s their new song with eulalie; mirror mirage.

i adore this track honestly. from the laxidasical hook to the pounding but soft beat, there’s so much to enjoy in here. the washes of texture that all of the main elements sit within do such a great job f positioning this song… somewhere else. all of the little details and pieces of particularity that make this a really unique sound are so much fun to unpick. my personal fave has to be the work they do with the snare and some world noise, swelling random noise into the hit of the snare to make it feel like it rises out of nowhere. i suppose it’s time to talk about the vocal now but honestly where do you start? it’s just so good, such a soulful and personality driven voice that manages to both deliver an absolutely killer performance while also feeling totally grounded in the sonic world of the song. it doesn’t even feel like a feature, this performance is so perfectly donor lens.

personally speaking i thought this song took a little bit more time to get going than it needed to, but i think that’s because i really enjoyed the latter parts of the song, and on re-listens i mostly was like ahh i want to hear the next bits already.

this is one of those songs where i can pretend to play piano way better than i actually can

i’m gonna go out on a wee limb here, and say that actually with this song i don’t have a direct musical comparison on it’s own, instead, i want to a of all direct your attention to the music video for this song, followed by the works of one mr adam curtis. i love adam curtis, and what i love about his work the most is that i don’t just watch his documentaries, i feel them deep inside in a strange and unsettling way which i can comfortably say i do not feel with any other filmmaker i think i’ve ever seen, with the singular exception of this music video.

i have a mildly contreversial opinion about donor lens here, which is for me this is some of their best work, which has been steadily improving over the last few months and years. they very much started out deep in the vaporwave scene, which is a scene i know a bit about, but not as much as them (i watched simpsonwave at a party one time and went wow this is cool). that said, i think they rule, their live set as i mentioned earlier is mad, you should check them out.

oh my god okay you neeeeddddddd to hear this vocal like oh my god. i don’t, know? how it’s done, but the main big note on the hook in the chorus like reset my brain a little bit. you know when you bark at a dog and it gets all confused? kinda like that almost goddammit, so good
