it’s review time! i figured since the last few have been pretty intense, i’d take a wee hunt through the database and see what else we have. enter flou~, submitting this groovy little world of songwriting into our lives. i kinda wish i’d come across this one a few weeks ago when it was super hot and sunny because this song is so lovely but i’m not in the right enviro to be listening if i’m honest. this is an ideal one for headphones on, long walk in the evening sun with no destination. it’s a track called beach baby (mimimi) and it is pure vibes and lovely songwriting. take a listen and let’s get into it.

what i like

what i like

i love how this track knows how to just ebb and flow the elements that set the environment of the track. the groove on the guitar for example, maintain right throughout. at times just rocking back and forth on the main chord, before swopping in with the main lick, giving the song a sense of tension and development but without labouring the ideas into something more than it needs. the high strings are another great complement towards the back half, doing nothing more than lingering and lilting in the background. the effect is something that feels vast and detailed without feeling overwhelming, almost like sitting on a calm beach ha hey how about that. also can we talk about the vocal performance here because it’s immaculate. both beautifully performed and absolutely bursting with personality and tone. this is a songwriter that has clearly gone to great lengths to establish not just a voice and a style, but a whole musical world that it’s so easy to get lost in. i, for one, am queuing up for entry.

what i don't like

what i don’t like

this song does not put a foot wrong in my opinion. i think if i had to offer any critique, it’s that a b section melodically speaking that worked against the main ideas of the a could’ve been a great addition to develop out those ideas a bit more. but i don’t actually think it was super necessary for what this song is and is trying to do.

big tuneee ti’s just a big tune! sometimes, you’ve got a big tune, in the shape of a small song, and this is one, but it’s a big tune trust me

my drunk opinion

ohhh okay i don’t think this is a totally fair comparison because there are some stark differences here, however, this gives me an opportunity to share what i really really love about this song so we’ll do that by way of contrast and comparison. the song i thought of after listening to a ton of similar tracks is ceilings by lizzie mcalpine which, big tune, again, and great song in my opinion. a bit twee and moustache finger tattoo but still, great song. now it’s not a fair comparison because one is doing a great big epic outro moment with some heavy drums and so all of the quiet energy at the start serves more as a like build and contrast. here’s where this and that work in the same way though in a way that is instructive; both of these songs are experts at crafting their own worlds for their music in a way that listening to them feels as significant as just listening does. by anchoring their sound in simple rhythmic melodies that repeat the same motif over and over gently and in an unobtrusive way, both songs anchor the listener into that world and the mix of both of these songs favours real instrumentation the bleeds into each otherand the vocals gelling the song together. couple that with ample space to breathe and a knowledge of when to push further and when to pull back, and you have yourself a lil recipe for success.

should you listen to more

this artist has a bunch of really strong tracks out and i enjoyed listening to a lot of them. i think they’re super talented and have a really strong sound down in a way that you don’t often see. i think that combined with a strong emphasis on that worldbuilding i raved about earlier makes something unique and i hope they keep on trucking, thanks for submitting this one!
