ahoy! now, i know what you’re thinking, hang on a second, you think, isn’t that the header from last week? is this the same artist? no it isn’t! it is not, what you’re looking at is me making a boo boo and using the wrong image for last weeks review. rest assured, mistake corrected, we have the right band now. and what band is that? this band is two things: a subscriber and! also a band called freqz, one of those indie pop outfits who don’t take things too seriously. there are many like them, but this one is pretty good, and they’ve dropped a sick little song for us all to get grooving along to.

let's change it up! here are some genres we haven't featured recently, choose which one you want next week

so initially when i first started listening to this, i figured the vocals were a bit weak, but on a few more listens there’s actually something cool going on here. i really appreciate the breathy and real vocal work this singer is giving that feels extremely personable and physical. it’s something i always bang on about, when you’re doing your vocal performance, it’s always super important to lean in to the voice that you have rather than the one you want to pretend to have by attaining some level of technical proficiency devoid of personality. remember, music is a social phenomenon, and you will deliver a performance that is a million times better when you give the audience something to resonate with and feel rather than something that is /just/ technically proficient. bob dylan didn’t have a note in his head but when he warbles his way out into whatever song it is, i feel it in my bones in a way someone who has perfect pitch and no personality never will. this artist? their singing is riding that line between landing something technically and giving personality but they’re erring on the side of personality and it’s presicely the right move. i just wish their singing voice was that big more developed and full throated than this but it’s easily an 8 out of 10 for that performance.

the production here is another area where this is giving personality and real-ness over anything particualrly precise. the guitar work and frisky drums really do the work for making this feel alive. especially the bridge section around 1:45 where this all takes a bit of a jump. the chord work is a little loosey goosey on top of some big riffs and open hats making this a piece of high energy standing in stark contrast with the verses and even those pre-choruses where things are played so much more close to the chest. it’s also interesting to have the real emotional and performative high point of your song right in the middle of the song, it gives the piece a really interesting sense of completion and beginning, middle, end.

while i think there’s a lot to really like about this song, i also couldn’t escape the feeling that it felt lacking in anything that i could grab on to emotionally or melodically. for all the personality and energy on display, so much of it washed over me and left without giving me something to latch on to. the hooks especailly didn’t work their way into my brain. as a result, this felt rather lackluster and a bit like a non-event which was a shame because there’s a lot to like in this bands sound and i think they could be really on to something. it’s just missing that spark to make it work.

i don’t know how to explain this but this song is a song for a montage, i dunno what a montage of, maybe like a holiday or something, but a montaghe song, that’s what this is.

there are so many bands this act sound like in this song but i think a really good comparison in a kind of contrasting way is the song lucky girl by fazerdaze because actually they’re kind of doing very similar things but the biggest difference is in how fazerdaze leans much more heavily onto some real hefty hooks that stick their way into your brain while backing it up with the same kinds of fuzzy indie personality laden stuff you find in the rest of the song.

this is a rare instance where i think this song is not the best representation of what this band can do. i think there’s a lot here, but it doesn’t quite land on both feet. the rest of the album however? man, there’s some cool stuff here. the song grizzly peak in particular, banger frankly. why didn’t i review that song? well, i’ll be honest, got to this stage of the review and made that realisation and i’d already written the whole thing and i liked the bit about bob dylan, so, we’re here now. nevertheless, this is a cool band with some cool songs! check them out if you liked this song, or if you didn’t, either way!

ethan tasch / shell not only is this song a real high energy bop, but also, it has what could well be a seagull solo? yes, a solo, with a seagull making seagull noises. it’s kinda killer.
