hello and welcome to another issue of a single song review! sometimes, when starting something, you don’t need to get clever about it, you can just go for it. like writing this newsletter, i don’t need to be clever and coy here, because what we’ve got this week is a great song that i really liked! it’s an indie folk-y / pop-y song that really got me going. it’s got a lot of cool ideas, and best of all! it came from the mind and hands and voice of a subscriber. yeah that’s right, your number one tap for sick songs? this newsletter. meet george bone, and his song one/two summer fling! unless you are george, in which case, hey what’s up
i really love how this song builds itself up, in partciular the affectation on the voice with the gentle introduction of doubling up the vocal as the song goes from verse to verse. it’s a really deft touch that just adds a bit of weight to the vocal as the song develops, and it really works with the vocal riff on the pre-chorus. the intricate rhythmn of the singing gives this such a pop star edge to it, but those little details on the vocals keep it really grounded, giving it all a sick unique flavour. it’s not even something that confines itself to detail either, the bridge moment with the choir and chorus coming in out of nowhereeeeee? oh man, so cool. and when it comes back in that final chorus to work against the arpeggiating violin and main chorus line, it just lands on both feet.
also i really want to talk about the instrumentation here because this has the trappings of a fairly simple song that’s just working a little chorus run, but it really isn’t. there’s some incredibly interesting and fun stuff. the almost-cadence in the first chorus that leads us to that main hook line is really cool, and to just bounce of the back of it with some noodly strings is a really gentle and effective way of moving from that section while achieving the objectives of laying up that big main line without blowing the section into a big moment so the second verse can breathe.
what’s more, the production on this is top notch. everything from the mix of the drums giving a really solid rhythmn to the gentle notes on the strings being able to ring through without being lost to the massive vocals feeling big and airy and powerful. it’s all done expertly and combines to become a really banging track.
i found that the really epic nature of this song was let down a bit by the percussion. i think that’s my biggest gripe. it all was mixed brilliantly like i said, but at no point was there any attempt to really get involved in some of the heavy lower end stuff that could’ve really made this feel as big as it’s aiming for. a bit of floor tom, the odd crash cymbal and some more aggresive percussion and you’d be off to the races on this. sadly without it, despite all the great work being done melodically and on the higher and mid-er parts of the spectrum, the bottom end feels, well, absent.
hey i been there i’ll tell you what. one two summer fling? yeah, many such cases
i sure am hoping it still counts if i say this reminds me of another george. it really does tho! all i could think of the entire campaign was george ezra, a singer who while he has that whole radio 1 mainline pop singer energy, actually has a lot going for him as a strong songwriter in his own right. i have a pet theory that he’s a singer that got too big? like he’s got chops for days, but has really been pushed down a very mainstream line of songwriting when he could be doing all kinds of wild stuff if he had the room to. regardless, i like me a bit of both georges.
this is a singer thats going places. theres some real pop chops going on with some catchyyyy choruses and moments backed up with those really neat bits of melodic detail and energy going on. i do think this song is a bit of a cut above though, and while i like some of the old stuff, i really liked this. if this is the new direction the songwriting is going then keep going! it rules.

there’s a moment in the bridge of this song where it really pops off, and it’s so cool. get the cool background sorted, go a bit bananas with a lil bit of synth and then what do you do? you bring in a lil tiny bit of sax, and sax it up.
i think i like this song. nope, i dont’ think i like this song, i know i like this song, it rules.
this song feels like walking in rain
