good morning everyone, i’m going to be entirely honest with you, this is going to be a super short one because 1) i’m just back from a pair of festivals p much back to back and i am eggs haust ed, 2) i have a brand new playlist in the works for you and 3) i also have a few fiesty little finds from said festivals that i’m doing a write up on, so keep an eye out for the rest of that over the next few days. in the meantime however, we’re going to take a tiny dip into a killeerrrrrr country folky indie song that a subscriber sent in. meet heidi browne, and their track dead leaves. heidi if you’re reading this rules.

something i often pine for with these songs that start out with and run with really pensive and moody main courses, is i never feel like they take the ideas they set out and run with them as far as they should. either, they don’t bother and want to just hang out in something that creates it’s own sense of atmosphere and just works within that, which is grand, or, they try and miss the mark. this song, meanwhile, does it with ease. the initial few minutes are spent setting the scene and delivering a little bit of mood using some simple mechanics; a little arpeggiated guitar, a delayed electric in the background grooving about, some pensive drumming. it’s nice, it feels good, it’s got something to say but it’s not going mad about it. but when this song starts to go? oh boy, it goes, it goes as far as it wants to and no more and no less. the tools it uses to deliver that like the massive groove, the hauntingly beautiful backing vocals or the endlessly catchy vocal meldodies make this the kind of song that makes you want to just loop this again and again.

as much as i really enjoyed the layering in aspect of, in particular, the vocal work on this where more and more elements work their way in sequentially, i did think that the vocal on this was at it’s absolute strongest when supported by those backing vocals. i really do think there could’ve been a bit more liberal use of especially the whispy breathy backing vocal on this was such a great combo and using it so sparingly was a missed opportunity.

songs like this make me want to take up smoking (positive)

this is reminding me masively of maggie rogers and that’s great because maggie rogers rules.

i’ll be honest withyou my eyes are drooping and i barely listened to much of their other stuff, but the stuff i heard was cool! so, probably, there’s some cool stuff going on and i think they’re really cooking but in terms of giving you detail, i can’t sorry! enjoy tho xx
