i have many questions for this weeks song. first of all, i need to know what the hell is going down in indonesia because the amount of absolutely killer bands coming out of there is off the charts. whatever it is, may it please continue because this song was sent in by a subscriber who is on to that juicy inside scoop landing their track in the submissions pile and it sounding like this. heavy, nasty, gnarly and my word does it rule. secondly, how does it feel to be the first artist featured on here where your press photo is featuring a tank? meet konig, subscriber, face melter, submitted of this weeks absolute banger.
this song is drama start to finish. from that opening beat with the cool as hell vocal on top of the build before the first verse just grabs the hairs on the back of your neck and says hi hello. i really really enjoy the use of whatever the effect is on some of the down beats that are given that little bit of the disneyland bass slide like dolby full atmos sound. it’s really effective and used really well to land some of the heavier hits. i also really enjoy the moments where this song just decides it’s time to go. like it doesn’t spend much time stitching things together or making the flow of the song feel natural, it just says it’s time to do the new riff. this style is done with such gravitas and power that it just absolutely works, it’s new riff time, get with it scrub. and those riffs, man when they hit they make the listener, no, sorry, they force the listener to adopt a stink face and just bob along in absolute respect of how heavy they hit.
i was thinking about this the other day actually, right so basically here’s my gripe. and again, couching this one a little like oh yeah, got something to say but not too much y’know but hear me out on this one. i think that bands like this need to lean into stylisation with their production to stand out more. i think there are so so so many bands like this, and so many of them sound so similar production wise because they’re all chasing the same kinda sound rather than carving new avenues. and this band has chops, like this song is top top top tier, but production wise while it’s all done super professionally and to a really high production quality, it just feels, run of the mill. like take a band like turnstile who are blowing up massively lately, their stuff is really good don’t get me wrong, but in a lot of ways they’re not really knocking down new walls in the museum of hardcore music, musically speaking. but stylistically? stylistically you can spot one of their songs a mile off, and that’s because they’re leaning into a really interesting stylisation of their music, and it works. i think if this band were to take that approach, working less hard on making the song sound as good as the songwriting, and instead leaned into a bit more stylisation, you’d be onto a real winner.
keep thinking of that old meme where the guys seeing adele and he like freaks out and opens his mouth all wide, that was me the whole runtime
just to iterate on my point a wee bit, i do think turnstile is a good point of comparison for one thing and one thing only. both this song and that one use a long bass slide on a drop to bring in a new heavy riff section, at 1:28 on birds. it’s a really really cool section but again it’s that thing where turnstile are leaning into stylisation with it, whereas this band are using it as a detail that gets lost.
this band slaps, i really really like them but unfortunately this is a . sorry, hang on a second, this is a debut. this, this is a debut. a debut song. like their first song is this. that’s crazy dude, keep an eye on these guys for sure because if this is the starting point, well, goddamn.
