before we get started, wee reminder of our upcoming event in london next month! it’s gonna be so much fun, grab your spot!
hello and welcome back! sorry this review is a little bit late, our announcement yesterday threw things out of whack, blame me playing warhammer and not scheduling the email in time. back to normal next week! in the meantime, we’ve got a really cool song for you this week, from an artist that’s giving the term tour de force a tour for it’s money. meet magindara, and their track dumb luck, a pop song that blows other tracks out the water. with it’s soaring vocals, catchy melodies and lovely tones, it’s honestly a banger to get you going this tuesday morning.
first and foremost, we need to talk about the vocal performance in this song because man, it is absolutely killer. massive vocals, tons of energy and personality coming through, fun little trills and riffs thrown into the beginning and end of lines. it’s all happening here, and it’s a performance that’s equal parts distinctive and interesting while being delivered by a performer that knows their craft to a t. the lyrical content backs it up with force, with some sharp wit, fantastic imagery and really well constructed verses that put you in the shoes of the song and get the premise and ideas over in a flash so that they can begin to explore some rather deep and interesting themes and give you a real snapshot of what it’s like to be the writer. lyric writing isn’t easy but this song makes it look it, and that’s the sign of a really good lyricist. setting that all aside, there’s still a tonnnnn to enjoy about this song, but before getting into the specifics, i wanna talk about tone. this song does such a great job of producing the feeling and energy of a top tier disney song. i think the acoustic guitar does a lot of the heavy lifting on this, the synchopated pattern playing against a really straight beat and solid rhythmn guitar does a lot here, espcially with that little bit of crusty guitar coming in the guitar and then departing in favourof the synth during the first chorus. the mix makes it all come together, with everything feeling crisp and real but with nothing fighting for space or energy. it’s just top tier stuff all the way through.
i think for a song that’s got so much going on, my one criticism might be a bit strange but basically i think this song could’ve done with a bit more melody in the instrumentation. it’s got a lot of great stuff, but it’s not doing anything to work with the really dense melody in the vocal. the result is at times the instrumentation can get stale when some simple elements that counter to that vocal would not only give it some life and energy, but also serve to cohese the song together in a way that would’ve benefitted it greatly.
i bet it’d feel so good to be on the flying surfboard from treasure planet with this blasting in your steampunk airpods while you fly near a spaceship made of wood.
ohhhhh here’s a good one. puppy dog by post animal, an absolute beast of a song with tons and tons of ideas, cool performances and detail, and it’s a banger in a lot of the same ways that this song is!
i am really enjoying this artists more recent stuff and i think they’ve really kicked it up a notch on their craft. that said, i wasn’t super gassed on their older stuff, so personally speaking i will be sticking to the recent album and enjoying it immensely and i hope that you do too! or that you enjoy their older stuff, or both! basically, i hope that you, yes you, you personal y yes i’m looking at. i’m looking at you, buddy. i hope that you, that you have a good time. a great time, even. a great time indeed, alone, or with friends. i hope that.

more i’ve been listening to
becky hill actually drove her car through the wall of my front room to deliver this song to me, attached to a baseball bat. that’s my brush with fame with this song, a true story if ever there was one why do you ask
do you know how annoyed i was to fine that this artist was too big to be featured on this newsletter as an underground find? not at all, because this song is frankly amazing and this artist is destined to blow up mark my words.
what if the two most annoying and unhinged artists who i love and adore wrote a song together that was both weird and fun and interesting? what then?
what did you think of this issue of a single song review?do you want more like this? less like this? something else than this? let us know! |
or just reply to this email! what did you think? what would you change? how are you?
