i have to be honest with you gang i went on a little walk today and i didn’t freeze my tits off. we did it. we made it. the dark days are over, all is well and i can tell you. i want nothing more than to be sweating like crazy having a lil boogie in a silly little outfit that’s very hard to get out of. and to do that i need some tunes!!!! who’s with me! i saw tunes you say need ready tunes

tunes

okay we’ll work on that anyway. here i be, consulting the ol database of tracks, and what have we got? we’ve got a live one. meet mara liddle, and their track spin, it’s a good… spi you know waht never mind.

what i like

you know the hardest thing to do in dance music? dynamics. because in dance clubs and the like, you don’t want dynamics, not really. you want to get lost in it, washed away in it and taken to another plane with it if you know what i mean. it’s the kind of music that sits across from dynamics and stares at it. but you knwo what music desperately needs to not be god awful and boring? d-d-d-d-dynamics. for the uninitiated, dynamics are when a song plays with how much energy is on display in a track. often you see this in terms of like a bridge or a middle 8, a section where the song changes massively, dropping down it’s tempo and energy and instrumentaiton. then wouldn’t you know it, we’re strapped into a rocket ship and taken into a big build and off into the final chorus on our way home. lovely formula, tried and true, when it hits it hits. not so in dance music. that’s not me saying there aren’t drops and builds or anything there are, dance music is full of them, this even has one too. but the harder thing to do is manufacture a feeling of acceleration that songs often have but few dance songs manage to execute well. take the first and last choruses in this track for example, they’re amazing examples of precisely this level of acceleration. leaning into the track, giving it some whellie. this is done via simple things, the increased energy in the drum tracks locked up in the upper right of the mix, the extra little synth synchopation, the additional rhythmic elements pinging back and forther. it’s so easy to fall on your face showing basic escalation in instrumentation and executing without finesse but this lands it in style. i’m sort of harping on about this element because it’s my absolutely favourite part of a generally great song.

what i don’t like

this is another track we’ve had recently where the production is too pristine. it’s a great track, it’s produced super duper well, and that almost let’s it down somewhat. the sounds are all perfect and immaculate, the delivery is beat and note perfect and so while it brings a lot to the table and achieves a lot, it just doesn’t quite summit that level of distinct quality and tone that makes something like this transcend.

my drunk opinion

it is cool tho, and it has me vibing and dancing right here in my comfy socks and my oodie. there’s an image for you.

my drunk opinion

recently came to my attention that not enough people are familiar with rose gray, so let this be your edcation people.

this artist is cooking, and i am confidentally adding them to my list of artists who are defo on the come up. it’s got talent, it’s got vocals, it’s got style, it’s not quite there yet but honestly. it’s a hop and a skip away from the big leagues.
