introducing: preferences!
it’s a big week everyone. in line with a lot of the ideas from the end of last year, i’m really excited to introduce to you all content preferences! now, you’re in control of
a single song review. that’s right, you can now decide the following on your preference centre:
snooze: want a break? turn on snooze and you won’t hear from us for a duration of your choosing between 2 weeks and 6 months
emailing tempo: we send weekly, but for some that’s too much. choose your preferred tempo out of weekly, monthly or quarterly
content preferences: some people love reviews, some people love playlists and some people just want to hear about what we do to support artists. if that’s you, let us know what content you want!
note: preferences are optional, we’ll continue to send as we normally do every week if you want to ignore them.

everyone i have excellent news. you see, the quality of the artists and songs getting submitted this year especially? i don’t know what it is. but it has just gone through the roof. like the music has always been good, we’ve had some real bangers on here. even some real big artists on their way to the roof. but lately it’s like every track submitted is just so gosh darn good. this weeks song is no exception, meet miss lilly an artist i am very quickly becoming so enamoured with. their track wrong city is this weeks must listen and i beg you, i implore you to give it a listen. it’s so good.
there is such a sense of drama in this track conveyed in so many ways big and small. from the deft mix of sounds and environments into a world all of it’s own. to moments and beats where entire sound scapes snap into being in an instant only to punctuate a point and then skedaddle. it’s replete with detail, full of energy and absolutely amazing. there’s a breakdown in the last minute or so of this track that mixes together a heavy beat, a class act of a vocal chorus. and on top of it, a sort of goblin mode. and it works, it works so well and it’s placed within the track with such care and craft you wouldn’t clock it if you didn’t listen again and again. and i have been, oh boy have i been. this music is so dense. what’s more, it’s only 2:34 long, an absolute stormer of a song that covers so much ground in that time. to be able to deliver one of my favourite vocal performances in ages in that time showing range upon range upon range. it’s amazing.
i love this track, i do. i really really do, so what i say next i say out of love. the hook in this song just doesn’t quite connect. it’s all set up so well, it’s all crafted delicately, but it justttttt misses for me. i’m not sure what it is and honestly, i wouldn’t know where to start with this the song writing here is next level. it just doens’t quite land that catchy hook to keep me whistling long after listening.
gonna start headbanging at that goblin bit when i hear this live like i’m listening to korn
i’ve actually been struggling with this one for a bit, trying to pin down a comparison that fits and i’m kinda coming up empty. they listen doechii as an influence among others, and this track with szo hits a lot of similar beats. but not quite. this is an artist doing something new, and that’s pretty rad, so please accept this not quite right comparison.
i’ve been listening to this artist pretty much non-stop for a few days now and i’m in for the long haul. this artist has something i’m telling you all, they’re going somewhere and you heard it here first.
