i have a secret to tell you, and that’s that the best, number one, most top notch place to find new absolute bangers? it’s at that submit a song link at the top of each newsletter. i get literally several hundred songs through a month, and i listen (just about) to each one! i genuinely do go through them each week and check them out and there is soooooo much talent in that little database. so, before we begin, i just want to drop a lil thank you to all of the artists who’ve been submitting. we only have so many slots, so if you don’t get featured then i am really sorry, but rest assured your effort is appreciated. now this week, we found a gem of a track in that aforementioned database, and here it is. meet souza and turquoisedeath, and their hip hop jazzy number, perfect timing. thank you for submitting, and everyone else…

okay first off, the cut at 2:25, where it all stops for a beat and then back in? love it, love when people do that, it’s always sooooo sick. i know it’s been used a bunch in other artists things, but honestly it works for me every single time. now that we’ve got that out the way, let’s take a look at the rest of the song because ohhhhhh boy is there a lot here. next thing i want to take a look at is that trumpet line, because, and i don’t say this lightly. it is deeply unfair how that is both tonally perfect for this song and also so earmeltingly catchy that i have been whistling it for hours now. just a ripper of a line. but it wouldn’t be complete without the rhythmn and bass in this which is bringing such quantities of groove and vibe this song feels like a truck that needs the roads closed on account of how much it’s bringing to the table. the drums especially do so much with just a basic basic beat and it makes me want to air drum for the entire runtime of the song, hypothetically.

i wouldn’t actually, of course, i’m a very serious music reviewer, one who is always being extremely serious and normal. i’ll tell you what is not normal however, how much i adore the rapping in this song. it’s riding that line between mumble and spitting. bringing such tone and energy to the performance while also maintaining that sort of detached quality that so many rappers do so well. the result is something you don’t just listen to on a lyrical level, but something you feel emotionally and deeply.

i think one area where this song is left lacking a little bit is the aforementioned drums, and specifically the fills. the drumming in this is killer don’t get me wrong, but one of the things that makes this song work is that the underlying beat doesn’t really get stale at any stage, it doesn’t feel like anything looped around or duplicated. this makes it all feel natural, as though you walked into a venue and a performer was mid song. that illusion is broken somewhat by the drummer repeating the exact same fill again and again, making the beat feel repeated when a tiny tiny bit of variation here and there would’ve done so much. i’m not even saying to stray from the snare roll as a concept, all it needs is a little bit of interpretation here or there and you’d be right in with this being a real performance by a real performer.

i listened to this song 3 times by mistake because i didn’t realise it was 1 song and also because i didn’t want to realise anything else

i’ll be real with you gang, got a bit sidetracked finding a good comparison to this, got a bit distracted and wound up listening to loads of stuff for the last like, hour. anyway, this mac miller song rules, let’s go with it

this artist is doing a lot of things right and i hope they continue to do so. between the collabs with producers that make their songs unique and powerful. the rapping is on point, with a unique voice that makes some killer killer tracks. i hope that it is only on the up for this artist because their listener numbers and the quality of what they produce are wayyyyy out of wack.
