another big week for being the person sitting on the big database of excellent music being sent in by really cool artists who smell great by the way. meet new music, the song, as opposed to the concept. that’s this weeks track, it’s got a bit of this, a bit of that, and nooooooo vocals, but! a very cool music video i liked a lot. it’s by a band called totorro, and i think they’re really neat, so if you’re with me, and i hope you are, let’s dive in with both feet.

what i like

this is a song that is just bristling with melody and texture. i know that’s describing most songs, but this song really is the real deal. every second is packed with creativity and energy made all the more impactful by the combo of the production and tonal contrasts. put some headphones on and pay attention closely to how the different guitars are spaced. you might notice that where they sit physically in the mix, as though you closed your eyes and they were in the room with you, is spaced out. it’s a really cool detail that produces these really intricate melodies built up of individually simple, but in combination complex riff frameworks. these in conjunction with a sense of narrative that pervades the whole track mean that as the song works it’s way through the different sections, and develops a gradual degree of intensity, it all feels natural and dense and intricate. like a big bush with pretty flowers.

what i don’t like

there’s a great moment right at the very end of this track where the melody that’s been played about with earlier on is restated with a ton more oomph. it’s really fun, and it hits really hard, and it’s something i wish this song did a bit more of. there are many a moment where the guitars hang out in a space with a somewhat holding riff, which with just a bit of a tweak and a re-hash, could be referencing those other riffs and just tie the whole piece together that bit more. a tiny bit more of that self referential activity and you’d be laughing.

my drunk opinion

need someone to call me and leave a voicemail that’s like, heartbreaking and insightful, or a monologue from bobs burgers, and then i can blast this underneath it on tiktok.

my drunk opinion

while perhaps a bit less whimsical, this song absolutely rules and sits squarely in the same space, namely all is violent all is bright by god is an astronaut which if you enjoy, and you will because it rules, then this song is for you.

i’ve been listening to this band a ton and i really really rate them. there’s a lot of this kind of intricate melodicy stuff going on, but don’t be surprised to encounter something on the heavier side. long live totorro, a really cool band that i hope keeps kicking it, and by it, well, let’s just say my
