okay i have to confess something. has anyone here ever heard of universal paperclips? it’s a clicking / accumulation game type thing in your browser. you play a robot making paperclips and it’s. well, it’s not that it’s good per say. more that once you start it you sort of have to keep playing it. like you don’t really have much of a say really, you’re just like oh i’ll click this little button here and see what happens and boom. a whole 24 hour period has gone by oh b oy. anyway it’s consumed me lately. entirely by accident i swear! i fully was like do not play that babygirl, you will get sucked in, and look what happened. here’s a link in case you want to play it but you were warned!!! anyway. i haven’t just been playing this silly game thank goodness. i’ve also had this little number in my slippery wet little ear holes. meet winnetka bowling league, and this weeks song america in your 20’s.

what i like

what i like

we have in this song, a truly exercise in tension. that feeling of ohh what’s going to happen. it’s literally dripping from this song, it’s sopping wet, gross! but yet, so alluring. take the very first 2 bars of the drum kit playing that 8 bar riff pulling up on that last high hat beat. it feels like something’s happened, or going to happen, or, what’s going to happen. every part of this song is just itching to tell you what’s going to happen next, but utterly refuses to. take the piano riffs in the verses and post-choruses. the ever so slight synchopation on an already somewhat stilted chord progression just dialls that tension up itty bitty bit by itty bitty bit. it’s beautifully done. the vocal work here is so so stunning too. from the gorgeous melancholoy lyrics that can’t quite put their finger on something huge, to the raspy whisper tone that feels just so real and personal like someone whispering a secret to you. and finally, my favourite thing? about it? perhaps. definitely one to write home about. this song knows how to write a hook and put one to work. in fact, it has tons, and tons and tons and tons. and they work really really well together whether it’s the big synth riff or the vocal line or whatever. it’s a song that works it’s way into your head, plants both feet and says no thanks i’ll stay here.

what i don't like

what i don’t like

while i love love love how this song really gets you ready for something, i can’t help but feel like it doesn’t quite get there. it doesn’t just scratch that itch quite right. it’s quite frustrating! it comes quiteeee close though, with the verbed out yelled vocals in the background or the big pushes on the drums, but doesn’t quite nail it i don’t think.

(respectfully) montage core

it’s not because of the america thing, entirely. but it is a bit about that, but it’s more for the incredible storytelling and world creation. the world being america, which doesn’t exist as we all know. anyway, as someone who only listens to ethel cain, geting a lot of ethel cain vibes from this.

should you listen to more

listen i don’t know where winnetka is, and i won’t be looking it up. because this band is not destined to stay there, they’re destined to go and go and go and keep on going, until winnetka or any other place is in the rear view mirror yes please. they’re a great band, they’re not been realeasing tons since this came out, but i need them to. for you, and me, and them, and ethel cain.
