right i’ve just been absolutely soaked so we’re having a wet lil review this week. drip drip. while i wring all i can from this water based metaphor, why not wallow with me a lil here because i’m taking you all down a little memory lane stream here. this week, we’re listening to some post-hardcore / metal-core / hardcore / somewhere in that lil venn diagram that i used to spend my time in from i was like 14 through to, well, 29. it’s real refreshing hearing music like this again, which is not to say it’s not been around - it obviously has, just i have been very out of the loop. so let’s pull on some dramatic fringes, maybe some chains and a few more ill fitting stereotypes and dive in to the shape of the sound by the band wreckship.
gonna get this one out the way at the jump. hello bass player, i see you, i hear you, you exist in a context that is surrounded by and following a greater context. i love your wee runs that you do on the big pushes that lead into the chord change, it’s really good, also your tone is great, well done. sarcasm aside i did really enjoy those little touches, they add quite a bit to the whole thing. also big props to the whole song really for landing a really thick and juicy production. some of the moments really blast through like the step from the bridge into the final chorus. those drums sound massive, the guitars are huge and everything is working together to make the whole song sound and feel so so big. they use that sound to really great effect too, really driving especially those massive verses. this is a song that is, and wants to be, and doesn’t shy from being absolutely massive.
it doesn’t feel stale either, with some really innovative little moments where it leads you into thinking the song is going one way but it’s going a different way entirely. there’s a great example at 0:50 or so where it feels like the song is getting ready to launch off into a really high tempo moment, but it keeps you guessing by sticking to some half tempo energy, but giving the groove a shake up needed to make it feel new and exciting. that all takes another jump right towards the end with some really wild outro moments. the gang vocals, the really unleashed drums, it’s all excellent.
i couldn’t help but feel like the clean vocal in this was stuck between two different places and couldn’t decide where it wanted to be. at times it really felt like it was going to land on something and start to cook, but it never quite did. it seemed to either want to lean into something really melodic and gentle, and at other times it had a really raw raspy dry energy. either of these would’ve been great but they do not mix at all, so the end result is something that feels like it’s playing second fiddle to the scream vocals, which doesn’t really work as well as it could’ve.
this song has me thinking of my first band again, man, that band was a lot of fun. we sucked, but in a great way, and i loved every moment of it.
i’m not sure it’s a great comparison, but this song reminded me of lower than atlantis something serious, man, remember them? idk if you do, but i thought they were, not great, when i first listened to them. this song in particular, my friends would blast it all the time and i’d be like this suckssssss. well, i was wrong, and it fits with this weeks wet theme! i’m all dry btw
i really really enjoyed the ep this song is from. there are some really banging songs on there, and there’s a lot of talent on display. i stand by my criticism btw, because in their song terminal radness, the vocals are much more in line with what i’m suggesting and it sounds amazing! but you might be wondering, why not review that one? well, dear reader, that’s because this song was sent in by a subscriber, and they wanted this song reviewed, so that’s what they got.
what did you think of this song? |
